I like to think if I got into an argument with Alan about trade I would continue foolishly driving into the abyss so other people get to enjoy it. I dunno that I would though? Anyway you should get to enjoy it:

Well, you should tell the EU that, because some MS and COM are cooking up an idea indefinitely to deny Ukraine some SM access benefits even after joining, because of the threat of ag competition. Whatever barrack-room lawyers say, these things are up for negotiation. www.ft.com/content/8463...

TIL if you do a local ubuntu server install with SSH password authentication allowed so you can log in once with password over LAN, ubuntu writes it to a file called 50-cloud-init.conf which overrides sshd_config so subsequently setting "PasswordAuthentication no" in sshd_config doesn't do anything

yeah. my general thesis is that a lot of people have never had or given themselves the opportunity to be bad at things that other people can see and evaluate

Up to 16.2 million people misled. Ofgem’s “warning” was a 1-in-20 cold day plus the loss of key infrastructure – a scenario it called very rare, and a deal will address the risk anyway. Repost and help us fight press disinformation.

hackedoff.orgOfgem’s gas shortfall was a rare stress-test scenario, not a winter forecastThe Daily Mail turned a low-probability Ofgem stress test into a warning that Britain could run out of gas, leaving out Ofgem’s own reassurance.

GM. We are going to win. An internet where 4 corporations wall us all into their surveillance state and make us pay rent forever is just incompatible with human flourishing. The only question is how long it takes everyone propping up history's worst billionaires to figure this out.

So you can one shot this plugin for firefox, I wasn't even intending to do that. Just talking to Opus on the web and off it went. Someone who is not about to go to sleep should do a proper job on this.

These guys will do anything to kill reform. They're partisans. They don't give a damn that FPTP is mangling our electoral system or that it could hand total executive control to Nigel Farage. They just care that a few times a century Labour has a majority. www.politicshome.com/news/article...

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

That's a good question - and would be very plausible that people who don't socialise much in person and live lives online are disproportionately likely to answer online surveys.

since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

Speaking purely personally, I do not see how I could argue I was using X for some "greater good" of advocacy when the main principles behind X these days are the a antithesis of basic rights, respect, freedoms and democracy. The ROI just doesn't pay off in making that particular devil's bargain. 4/

I thought this for a while but… You can accept a world of change! Nothing is going to be fixed for a while. But people can accept wars and even horrors beyond that. You can too But you must have agency or you’ll be lost. Take every day as it comes and make a better future. AI can help here.

Cmon someone has got to make a video of this thing being in a fender bender, breaching the compressed air and then demolishing a whole block of flats with an animal rescue shelter too.

Genuinely taken aback that this comment came from a *Labour* MP. Setting aside the 'debate' around women's only spaces this is basically saying the very *sight* of a trans person might upset her mum? Maybe Tonia could reassure her mum the trans person is just *another human being* and not a monster

Always worth bearing in mind that the markets are not the economy (as a general rule, not as specific comment on now). By the time the 10 o'clock news tells us we're out of a recession, the markets have been rising for 6 months in all likelihood. (& e.g. UK mkt bottomed day before lockdown imposed)

lol what?

you can't be serious. This reads Meta/Facebook/Insta is looking to grant itself the rights to scrape websites across the open web - and train Meta's AI - if a company after Oct 30, 2026 uses Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or other Meta services. So every biz. Read that again. Outrageous. 1/5

OK, there is something very, very weird going on in the press right now. It certainly appears, from the outside, as if certain people are being very much protected in a way that was not afforded to certain other people! Let's start with the facts around Lola Salem... 🧵1/

"Buy American, so it will stop working when you need it the most, and America will give your money to your enemy" is not a very good sales pitch. Trump and Musk are digging the grave of America's global tech dominance.

This is what keeps me aligned to be fair? I don’t want to give the scientists the satisfaction.

My totally amateur guess of a foreigner (I'd love to hear British comment) is that BoJo is evil in the classic "old boys club" sense, "down with the proles, fuck the piglet". Still evil, but not necessarily up to full scale treason, Farage-style. So "old chap Lebedev", yes, but hard no to Putin.

X has had more time to figure out how to cook brains without them leaving…

I think a factor that people intentionally refuse to consider is that a person with a decade-old account on twitter has probably built themselves sufficient insulation that they don't see the worst of the worst, whereas a new user's feed is 100% just Grok and Elon inventing new kinds of sex crimes
