This is brilliant, easy math--and born out by my 2024 resolution to start reading seriously again after becoming a parent. I started SO small. At first, sometimes just 5 mins a day before the baby woke up. But reading begat reading, and now this English major is once again tearing through novels.

Happy Asexual Awareness Week! Please check out my book The Map and the Territory, which has an aroace protagonist. As an ace person myself, Rukha is so special to me--she's full of love and curiosity and wonder for the world, even when it breaks. bsky.app/profile/amtu...

You can get my book The Map and the Territory in many places! Amazon: www.amazon.com/Map-Territor... Barnes & Noble: www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-map-an... Kobo: www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/... Bookshop: bookshop.org/p/books/the-... The publisher: www.candlemarkandgleam.com/shop/the-map...

People on Threads are talking about readers skipping sex scenes... The sex scenes in my upcoming book are vital to both character development and plot, not to mention worldbuilding implications. If you skip them, the rest of the novel literally won't make sense

The Killing of a Chestnut Tree is out today! 🌳 A gentleman detective murder mystery like no other - because the victim is a tree. I hope - if you choose to read it - that you enjoy it. I like to think of it as the book equivalent of a peaceful walk in the woods. 🌳

It's release day! ROSEMARY & THYME is live at retailers! Olivia Atwater offers up another gothic fantasy romance, full of dark magic, deceitful faeries, and "witty and nuanced enchantment" (Stephanie Burgis), in the second instalment of the Victorian Faerie Tales. oliviaatwater.com/book/rosemar...

Of course a person's ability to devote time to reading will depend, in part, on the unavoidable responsibilities that take up their time, but outside of that, some voracious readers (like me) are reading in lieu of other activities. It's my primary hobby; that's not true for everyone and that's fine

Again, not everyone can devote a lot of time to reading, and there's nothing wrong with not drowning in books. But it's also not that outrageous when someone does; they're probably not doomscrolling as much, or playing games, or watching as many shows, or whatever

Or they might be disabled or chronically ill in ways that require them to rest at home most of the time, and books are a great way to engage the mind amd heart when the body is struggling (this was my reality for a long time)

Starting PUBLIC ACCESS AFTERWORLD by Jane Schoenbrun this morning; I've been dying to get my hands on it and am excited to dive in!

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 3609: If ever you feel discouraged, know this. Every day you get up to write is an act of courage. Every word you manage to write is a light against the darkness. You may not see it from where you are now, but it's there. It's shining.

One way for an author to lose me as a reader when I otherwise enjoy their work is to be a snob about self-published books At least keep it to yourself if nothing else. No one has to read anything they don't want to, ofc, but every publishing path is a hard road; we should all be in this together

I think artists and sex workers should have a natural allyship. Both of us are often told we should not be allowed to charge for our work if it is at all pleasurable. Both of us are wanted for what we can do, but our work is considered not worth paying for. We should stick together

We won and didn't lose anyone! However, my character and one other are afflicted with some sort of lasting debuff/contamination, so we'll see what happens with that. Plus some very dramatic and unexpected events unfolded after the fight. Can't wait to see where things go!

Ended the session with a wild PHASE CHANGE for the boss. Gruesome, too!! Continuing next week!

Exhausted after getting only about 3-4 hours of sleep. I know some people pride themselves on living like that but I feel like I'm walking through water. Here's hoping coffee helps!

Honestly several things are depressing about ai but the two that stand out are the eagerness of people to outsource thought because cognitive effort is uncomfortable, and the casualness with which people use the shiny, easy thing knowing it's bad for climate change

A book so good I had to own it in both ebook and print!

Early days, thinking of assigning this book to my speculative fiction students next year, but sitting with the sheer beauty of "Loose-u" as a casual insult on the printed page. I have never written my spoken Tamil-English like this and it is such a joy to see someone else do it...

Honestly, on my most difficult writing days, I often have to tell myself: “Fine, I admit I can’t write a GOOD version of this scene today, but I can at least write a really bad version & fix it later!” Taking away judgment in the first draft helps so much.

"You're in a bookshop walking along the stacks when all of a sudden you look down and see a book. You reach down and flip it over. The book lies there on its back, its pages exposed. The book wants to be back on the shelf but you're not helping. Why is that?"

But also, I feel sorry for agents who went into this gig to deal with authors and now suddenly have a new job which is basically doing a Voight-Kampff test on every submission.

I can't help but think that "just go indie" like it's an easy endeavour as correlates to: - it doesn't take as much skill and is less worthy of respect - it doesn't deserve to be paid as much Even though you're literally expected to pay for / handle the job of the entire pub house

So Eloisa James's latest book was given a cover made with GenAI. The publisher has withdrawn it and commissioned a new cover with a different artist. Props to the author for putting her foot down and the publisher for withdrawing it promptly.
