I’m curious if anyone else does this, although I know that a lot of the heavy readers I know don’t watch much or any live sports. And that switching back & forth would not work for many people. I like it. It also helps me regulate my emotional reactions to the game (and sometimes the novel).

5. reading while watching sports (during commercials & stoppages in play) or waiting for things—I can’t do this w/every novel, but it works well with romances & strangely, dense modernist novels likes James & Wharton; maybe b/c the density that holds in my head so I can dip in & out

This also only works because the other members of my household aren’t interested in watching sports & so are doing their own thing—if we’re watching together, I wouldn’t also read

I dipped way down (for me) 2019-24 after years of reading 50-100+ books a year. I’ve climbed back up the past two years by: 1. reading novellas & short novels 2. choosing a book to be my weekend read & purposefully taking 30-90 minutes to read it

3. having a classic book in Apple books & an owned or library ebook (libby) in the Kindle app on my phone—if I open one & am not in the mood, I choose the other; this keeps me from option paralysis w/all the ebooks I own but also accounts for varying reading moods

4. doing the same on my ereader but with a book I own & often one that’s longer or more difficult that I can read before bed or it captures me enough to find other time to read it; this is often literary criticism or other nonfiction

Award winning book from about a decade ago still good. More breaking news soon.

My memory of Ancillary Sword is that I read it once, enjoyed it, was surprised by what I got after Ancillary Justice, that there’s a fair amount of “comedy of manners” and that figuring out the “actual” gender of the Radch characters is more relevant than in Ancillary Justice

"How can I convey urgent social meanings while opening or subverting the possibilities of meaning itself?" – Robert Glück, Long Note on New Narrative

It arrives six months later than I anticipated (with lots of other writing in between), and I didn't land on the proper approach and structure until DRAFT 1E (the screenshot below is 1A), but: this goes live tomorrow (with a different title)

I have the day off today, so:

Continuing my slow read of The Ambassadors in the long gaps between NFL football action (Niners v. Falcons) and Strether is totally getting played—and yet it’s easy to see why he wants to be

Wm Henry Morris@wmhenrymorris.com

Strether is such an idiot Why do I kind of like him, tho

At this point, I have no idea how either the Valkyries or the Dream are going to win this seven game series. I know how both will lose it but not how they will win it.

You know how some people claim "magic realism" is just writers of fantasy genre trying to sound literary? Well I accuse "new weird" of being writers of literary fiction trying to sound cool. All of you suckers reading new weird have been tricked into reading literary fiction.

what if a novella that is really a novella (88 pages) a piece of fiction embracing and also rejecting both literary realism & weird fiction (and some other genres) a work that is absurd but gently so a work that is angry (under the surface) wmhenrymorris.com/fiction/elev...

Dippin' back into genre & I've been doin' just fine / Gotta, gotta put it on a shelf, because it's so confusing / It started with mystery, how did it end up like this? / It was only cozy / It was only cozy

I'm sorry but we have to put the word cozy up on a high shelf till we figure out what's going on.

Now I'm posting on reddit & getting downvoted / While she's talking about romantasy & sometimes horror / Now they're arguing & my stomach is sick / And it's all in our heads but he's claiming it's etc.

_As a writer, I feel I am always negotiating that: when to give something^ explicitly to the reader and when to hold back, or when to give just a little of it so that it can be sensed rather than simply seen_ ^earlier one of those “somethings” is the physical description of characters

This is excellent so far. I checked it out from the library because I saw it on the @dorothyproject.bsky.social website & Renee Gladman was mentioned. But Cain also invokes a lot of other favs of mine: Samatar, Woolf, Calvino, Lolly Willowes, Middlemarch, Anna Karenina.

ah, this space is so nice, so cosy, warm but not too warm, filled but not cluttered, not overwhelming but also not empty, abundant yet manageable, oh, but what now is this, the objects continue to pile up, the walls are closing in, the ceiling descends, so cosy but too close, too close, too
