At the #StandUpforScience rally in Chicago, one of the speakers mentioned that the most important six words are "let me tell you a story" when it comes to trying to explain why science funding is important. The idea is to explain to everyday people how the work we (scientists) do makes life better.

Apparently, some Houston voters are putting their I Voted stickers on the Lorenzo Salgado Araujo memorial. Stephen Miller is ALREADY trying to scapegoat others for losing whatever races they lose in Texas and elsewhere. This is a vivid testament that for some voters, his murder squad is the reason.

Hopefully this means liquid helium will be less expensive and availability will improve.

One reason Prop. 38 in CA is SO bad is that it is written such that only one institute could get ~$4 billion in funding and that Institute is run by the person sponsoring the bill. Here are some of the constraints the Prop. puts on the institute to guarantee only one place gets the money:

I was just telling a group of undergrads touring the lab that we don't have enough helium to ramp up our 7T MRI. We had to take it down to remove ice.

If the NIH succeeds in hiding reviewer scores, both program officers and investigators will have access to less information, increasing the risk that other factors (including political priorities) will be used to shape the future of US science and biomedical research.

Comments due tomorrow (Oct. 13) on a proposed change to NIH procedures that would conceal expert reviewer scores on grant proposals from program officers & PIs and reduce the effectiveness of peer review, part of a larger project to sideline experts and politicize federal funding decisions. 👇

The NIH proposal to conceal reviewer scores from program officers, investigators, and advisory councils is ill-conceived, introduces disproportionate weight to small percentile differences, diminishes the role of scientific peer review, and should be withdrawn in its entirety. a 🧵

You might remember images of the volume of paper at IRS. Biden created a new in-house scanning system to deal with the problem. Trump stopped that project, contracted it out at higher cost. The contractor was unable to deliver and its been further scaled back. So the paper keeps mounting.
