I’m going to try to learn something every day. Or, because humans are always learning: I’m going to try to *be aware of* learning something every day. And to document it here. Let’s see how this goes.

Hennepin County: tell your loved ones about Cedrick Frazier

Jill Bernard@jillybee72.bsky.social

I’m still laughing at the desperate way I handed my husband a piece of paper that said CEDRICK FRAZIER at the early voting center, because I realized we hadn’t talked about the whole ballot.

Tell the University of Minnesota person in your life that they can early vote at the Weisman Art Museum 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Monday).

At some point after the election there'll be a lot of pieces puzzling out how the Republicans got away with being so generously funded by a notorious white nationalist and it wasn't treated as a big, problematic issue. From the same reporters currently not treating it as a big, problematic issue.

Next time I’m stuck in a left-turn lane on my bike watching the light go cycle after cycle without ever giving me a legal way to escape, I should try this instead of filing an app request that’s rejected with no action

The closest I’ve come to death in Minneapolis was a right-on-red driver turning into me on the two-way at Stinson & East Hennepin. My bike hit her front quarter-panel and I barrel-rolled over her windshield. I was lucky with only a concussion. This directive can’t be acted upon fast enough.

Wedge LIVE!™@wedge.live

Today the Minneapolis City Council's Climate & Infrastructure Committee will be discussing the city's 2-way bikeways and conflicts with right turning vehicles at signalized intersections. Most of these intersections don't have signage prohibiting a right turn through a red light.

Crosswalk creepers might have surpassed bike lane blockers as my #1 daily irritant It’s just so… stupid

Like I hate a delivery van in the bike lane, but I get why they’re doing it. A three-foot head start on crossing the street? Come on

“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes. This mammoth figure exceeds the entire carbon footprint of most countries, including the UK, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Australia.” @euronews.com

euronews.comCycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprintIf everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

The bike rack at MIA is as full as I’ve ever seen it, which I assume is because of the one-day voting popup, but if some of us are here to look at art I can’t be too mad about it

Postscript: After 90 minutes of voting an art, I realized with dread that I’d left my key in my bike lock outside. It’s fine, though, nobody took it.

There’s been no bigger failure of the City of Minneapolis than its response to homelessness. It’s been abundantly clear since at least 2020 that trying to bulldoze people out of existence so you don’t have to bare the sight of them homeless in your neighborhood doesn’t solve the problem. 🧵

I am also here for the art. The crop art! Some of my favorite work at the State Fair this year was rye. I didn’t know crop art could shimmer!

At the Fair we don’t get artists’ statements. MIA gives us a chance to learn how the artists think about their work. These two really got me. (90,000 quinoa seeds!)

Go to your camera roll and search “boat” and post one that you like (Then search “ship” if you know what photo you want but your phone doesn’t think it’s a boat, take control of your destiny)

My experience as HCA with too many in the media has been disappointing. One texted us questions he wanted us to answer that were framed as what we needed to answer to defend ourselves from allegations from police. Instead we asked to meet and spent almost two hours showing him data, emails, etc..

Today's the day many more Minnesota cities open early voting locations. Also starting today you don't have to fill out an on-site early absentee application - you just vote as you would on Election Day. (Minneapolis's two early locales, the Govt Center & 980 E Hennepin, opened 9/18 and remain open.)

Peggy Flanagan@peggyflanagan.bsky.social

Minnesota, this election is too important to sit back or sit out. With expanded hours, more locations, and opportunities to vote on the weekends, it's never been easier to cast your ballot early. Make your plan at iwillvote.com

Makes sense, her laptop is probably where she keeps paperwork her father filled out when she was a child

Pat Thompson@pattho.bsky.social

DHS investigators not only took Ilhan’s cell phone, they took her computers, notebooks and her passport! These seem like important details. (You can tell who doesn’t read the full Wall Street Journal article: me.)

You cannot fix a broken system on Election Day.

Fossilized Tree Sap@amberrl.bsky.social

I did everything I could to keep her off the ballot. It didn’t work. And now I will not stand by while grown-ass adults try to excuse letting a fascist/Trump apologist win by default. YOU CANNOT FIX A BROKEN SYSTEM ON ELECTION DAY. Vote blue and keep on fighting every fucking day.

Council Member Soren Stevenson: Car share is important even if you're not a user, bc when people don't have access to transportation options, they will buy a car. Do you want 5,000 more cars on the road, in your way? Losing car share would have real impact across metro.

Fun fact for me: the show I’m doing a live improvised musical score for is the first one this year to sell out! Opening night is gone, but you can still get tickets for our other shows, Saturday through Tuesday.

The DFL trifecta did amazing things and it’s not because Walz was a progressive champion, it’s because he’s a DFLer and he didn’t get in the way. I’m excited to vote for Amy despite her milquetoast politics, because I’m excited to see what another trifecta can do.

(There are a lot of things I like about Walz! But he wouldn’t have pushed all those things through on his own.)

My favorite thing about this post is that it’s a real thing that happened

If you missed it at Open Streets, don't miss it here: One habit you can form to reduce your risk of bike theft, and one step you can take right now to drastically improve your odds of getting a stolen bike back. Help us spread the word!

Wedge LIVE!™@wedge.live

I wish I had asked public works about this statistic that 75% of Minneapolis bike thefts are from indoor spaces like bike rooms and garages. I know it's more common than people realize, but 75% is shockingly high.

I hadn’t realized the source. Awful.
