Doing a little early-voting precinct-by-precinct # crunching. Will dump it on you tomorrow. But my early conclusion is: the lower-income south side wards, especially Ward 6 & Ward 9, are doing a bang-up job early voting. Precincts with Somali-Minnesotans already voted 2x last midterm’s early vote.

🧵 Minneapolis early voting thru Monday. 7 full early voting days to go, but precincts in blue at/above 2022 *total* early vote. Orange = below ‘22’s total , but again, full week to go. Only 1 precinct (7-10 in Stevens Square) is below 70% of ‘22. Pace seems certain to smash 2018 midterm record (52k)

North Minneapolis Wards 4 & 5 are … ok? Pockets of strength in more prosperous NW corner & down by a previous pop-up site.

Overall, @maxhailperin.bsky.social thinks we might top 70,000 early votes, well above the 52k 2018 mid-term record and within shouting of 80k+ in 2024 presidential year. BUT it’s very important to note fear might still drop ultimately totals - spread positive messages & encourage people to vote!

Meanwhile, the fancypants areas of Minneapolis (lakes-area Ward 7 & 13, near-northeast part of Ward 3) are *relative* laggards but again, Ward 13 has a popup site at Lynnhurst on Wednesday. These areas are not as “under threat” from ICE, etc as W6 & W9, so their folks may vote normal/later.

Northeast Mpls Ward 1 (and Ward 3), pummeled by ICE, is also a relative laggard. Not sure why, but one theory is whiter wards are lagging generally. Meanwhile Ward 2 (U-area) lifted by Monday’s popup. W2 gains are off a low-EV-turnout base however.

… caveats: early voting may not predict ultimate turnout (could just be front-loading voters who would vote anyway), but it’s something DFL organizers have been driving voters to do. Areas lagging now may not ultimately — there are pop-up voting sites in slower Wards 8 & 13 this week.

Ok, some things that pop: Wards 6 & 9 are rocking. W6 has precinct 6-3, a huge EV area at Cedar-Riverside, but the whole ward (lots of Somali & Latino voters) is strong. 6-3 is 155% of 2022. Ward 9 is a medium-ish EV area but its poorer parts are easily besting small numbers.

Minneapolis hit 43,000 early votes today. Reminder: 46k early in all of 2022, the last midterm. 52k is Mpls midterm record (2018). Should top that given previous week saw ~13,000 early votes. Still a full week of early voting to go! 2024 presidential early was 86,500.

Gives me a chance to update this thread (bsky.app/profile/dbra...). With 30,000+ early votes in, Minneapolis is already at 2/3rds of 2022’s early voting 12 days before Election Day & 57% of 2018’s midterm record 52,000. Ward 6 blossomed after Tuesday‘s popup voting. Today is Powerhorn Park, 11a-6p.

The same guy who endorsed tafoya in the strib today wrote that "70 percent of the teams in the NBA could fold tomorrow and nobody would notice a difference with the possible exception of increase in street crime." He's considered a moderate.

45 years ago the NBA finals aired on tape delay at 11:30 p.m., but at least ticketholders got to see the game in prime time.

Struck by Strib Opinion’s “let’s endorse everyone” columns. Journalist writes Flanagan piece, full of caveats, reconsiderations. (www.startribune.com/mn-midterm-e...). Partisan pens full-throated Tafoya ad ignoring any of that. (www.startribune.com/mn-midterm-e...). Hope former style more convincing

Tell the University of Minnesota person in your life that they can early vote at the Weisman Art Museum 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today (Monday).

I always found it a bit weird that they chose Green and Blue for the two LRT lines. In my admittedly non-artistic mind, those colors just don’t contrast enough. I’ve always been curious why those two got picked.

I feel for the folks who are going to the airport on the train who get on the Green Line and not the Blue. And also, listen to the announcements, buds. Read the signs. #busride

One of my deeply held yet unauthoritative beliefs is that Emily Hanford‘s “everything you know about education is wrong” reports should be fisked extremely hard because they‘re extremely popular with the target audience

I fully admit it’s my knee-jerk contrarianism but the certainty just sets off all my former-journalist alarm bells. (Also you don’t see mainstream newsrooms go this hard on anything else, like, say, fascism — @jcollins.bsky.social & some excepted)

I guess I have too many teachers in my life who told me, “yeah, some instruction modes have some problems for some kids but these ONE WEIRD TRICK takes are porn for The Atlantic Magazine class”

I actually like the Strib’s new insipid incarnation under Phil Morris better than reading the traditional full-throated endorsements of Michele Tafoya, Ron Shutz & Anders Folk (though the latter has Rochelle Olson & Eric Roper for that).

Strib: “Introducing The Case For, our new election series where each candidate gets an endorsement. From one columnist. That's right. We believe democracy works best when people explain why they're voting exactly how we already knew they would. Why take a stand when you can just assign one?"

I’m in one of these photos. Spent the day in Brooklyn Center. You never know what you’re gonna get at the doors, but the people who opened them were nice, a few didn’t know when Election Day was (it happens, that’s why we‘re meeting people where they are). Peggy did a great job firing us up!

Peggy Flanagan@peggyflanagan.bsky.social

Minnesotans are fired up and ready for big, bold change. Pramila Jayapal gets that, and I was so grateful to have her join me and DFLers in Golden Valley and Brooklyn Park!

I’ll say it again: I’m not getting any clear signal on how the election is gonna go (honestly, not much bad but you never know what non-answerers are thinking & lists vary in their votingness), but have come to accept that the ground game is ”doing the work“ and Ds are doing a lot of it.

It's okay to be angry at bad leadership and broken systems *and* still vote & work within them - because we shouldn't cede any of the tools we can exercise power with. Let's keep anger pointed where it should be and give more energy to building forward and caring for each other along the way.

So many Minneapolis voters are voting early that the elections staff is starting to wonder if election day is going to be boring.

U students get a pop-up Monday (the controversial rally is all about this) at Weisman 10a-5p. No North pop-ups but an early vote center there. Having worked the N side in recent years voters are fairly traditional and seem to like Election Day voting. I don’t know Souls to the Polls factor.

I realize starter homes are an endangered species and the west coast is pricey but the lowest priced home in this story is $480,000 and includes one 20 miles outside Dallas.
