A lot of people will have a hard time supporting Jamison Whiting for mayor because of the way he's forever perverted the meaning of a "scorecard." You can't score your own actions and opinions. You'll always agree with yourself.

taylr@taylordahlin.com

dryden: accountability big part of rebuilding trust in district. people feel they couldn’t trust the transformation plan as they didn’t see accountability taken for the CDD. community needs to know they have been heard. wants to do monthly meetings and a scorecard like jamison whiting does

Yard Sign Pundit: "A lot of the big houses in the lakes area who've historically displayed questionable politics don't have Anders Folk signs like you'd expect. You have to question whether the enthusiasm will be there on election day."

Josh Martin ran for high party office, he won, and now all he does is spout the party line. Incredible fall from grace.

Council Member Michael Rainville today, claims that eliminating the office of community safety contradicts what voters decided in 2021 (wrong-OCS was not a part of that ballot question). He rambles on about how it also ignores the mayor's reelection and then equates it with defunding the police.

Michael Rainville 5 months ago, voting against a national search for a new commissioner of OCS: "Are we getting what we paid for with this whole department?" Before doing a search, let's answer the question of "whether there should be a commissioner."

Council Member Chowdhury on proposal to eliminate Office of Community Safety: "We can spend less on coordination" than $2.1 million. Says we can do without "layers and layers of management," as the city lays off employees elsewhere to close a $60 million budget gap.

Council Member Jamison Whiting: "I think this is one of the most reckless pieces of work to come across this body." He doesn't accept the elimination of the Office of Community Safety that oversees and convenes work around public safety alternatives.

Whiting: What we have without an office of community safety is a police chief who "inevitably becomes the dominant force." "If our goal is to increase MPD's influence over Minneapolis' public safety strategy, the best way to do that is to eliminate" OCS.

Council President Payne: "This pathway is only reckless if you just don't have faith in the mayor." Nothing prevents departments from appealing to the mayor to remove barriers, nothing prevents the mayor from staying committed, nothing makes the chief more powerful than the mayor.

Never seen Jamison Whiting speak with more passion than today when defending the Office of Community Safety from elimination. So I felt bad when his only allies were an incoherent Michael Rainville and Linea Palmisano.

Oldsters who recall the 2021 election will appreciate references to "14 bosses" and "who's in charge here?" during today's council meeting. Soren Stevenson: charter says chief reports to mayor, ordinance says chief kind of reports to the commissioner, kind of to the mayor.

2021 ballot question on strong mayor system centered on Frey team argument there was confusion about who was in charge and how if too many people are in charge, nobody is in charge.

Now the roles are reversed and progressives are asking for clarity about who's the boss, and whether a glorified coordinator with no authority is worth nearly $400k/year leading an office that costs more than $2 million/year.

Council Member Soren Stevenson reprimanded by colleagues for failing to insert the word "allegedly" when talking about the misdeeds of our previous police chief. This was in the context of today's "WHERE'S TODD???" debate over whether the office of community safety is worth the cost.

Weird split on today's City Council vote to move forward a proposal eliminating the Office of Community Safety, currently led by Todd Barnette. Yes: Wonsley, Payne, Chavez, Stevenson, Chughtai, Vetaw, Osman, Warren, Chowdhury No: Palmisano, Rainville, Whiting Abstain: Shaffer

Council Member Chughtai claimed today that 75% of the people speaking publicly to defend the office of community safety from elimination "in private will talk about the failures" and say they don't know what the office does all day, don't know what they produce.

Much of what @nerd4cities.bsky.social is praising is the Hennepin design. So it's important to remember Frey's first instinct after becoming strong mayor was to appoint a public works director (Kelliher) who wanted to kill the Hennepin Ave bike lane. We had to fight to keep it in the plan.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey@mayorjacobfrey.bsky.social

We already knew Minneapolis was #1, but it’s always nice to get some confirmation. Great parks, great neighborhoods, the best biking in the country, and a city people want to move to. Thanks to CityNerd for the shoutout!

It's hard to imagine life without the office of community safety in Minneapolis. How would we replace the layer of bureaucratic shielding between the mayor and the police chief? Who would react to questions about police overspending with sleepy eyed surprise?

This is shitty punditry. Republicans are rarely asked to denounce their extremists because the media gets bored at how bigotry and extremism permeates their entire party from top to bottom. Then they get giddy at any hint of controversy on the left, it's all they can talk about.

In my Minneapolis household we still have conversations where I say very helpful reassuring things like "but they're not doing that so much in our area right now." By which I mean "you're safe to go for a walk, worry less about federal paramilitary street shakedowns of brown people."

Still living with the trauma from Metro Surge, and one of the two major political parties is filled exclusively with electeds and candidates who endorse, or wouldn't lift a finger to oppose, a campaign of racial terrorism if their leader ever decided to turn up the dial on us again.

So it makes me a little sick to imagine even the smallest possibility that any statewide election in Minnesota could be a close call.

I continue to receive bad-faith MAGA mailers attacking Amy Klobuchar for failing to support the "progressive revolution." Can't fool me though.

Guy at Aldi just walked away with a lady's shopping cart. Lady shouts excuse me excuse me! And then chased after him. He realized he mistook it for his cart and apologized. Long story short, Moriarty won't prosecute. No surprise to anyone.

Naive innocent with childlike understanding of the world: "Could this really be real? Does this Democrat really want Republican endorsements?" Me, a Larry Jacobs level pundit: "Yes, as long as none of the rest of us learn about it."

For years we've been told the DSA is a menace — a threat to our very way of life — by the same Frey guys courting MAGA Republican support for their candidate for Hennepin county attorney.

Local TV keeps telling me it's controversial for a streamer to believe American foreign policy choices invited the 9/11 attacks. Since the twin cities TV market bleeds into Wisconsin, please let them know their Republican senator believes 9/11 was an inside job.

Key issues before voters in the 2026 midterms: ➡️Trump raiding the home of a member of congress to solve the mystery of whether Ilhan Omar is really named Ilhan Omar ➡️Trump amplifying the woman who abetted the rape of the Democratic candidate for governor of Ohio ➡️Gas prices

Glad they unearthed the black and white high school yearbook photo but it's only going to increase the weaponization of federal law enforcement when Trumpers realize Ilhan Omar was the girl in high school who wouldn't give them the time of day.

I should have mentioned that my office is Minneapolis Elections & Voter Services. The Mayor's budget eliminates seven staff members less than two weeks before an anxiety-inducing midterm. No more high school election judge program. No more voter outreach.

When the mayor's proposed budget eliminates half our office, we fortify ourselves with baked goods. Yesterday it was pastries from Dahlia. Today our colleague baked for us.

San Francisco's latest walking tour takes people past cats in windows, and apparently, the demand is enormous. Nearly 100 people gathered Saturday for a neighborhood “catwalk,” a free afternoon stroll past the homes of local cats, all volunteered by their owners for a moment in the spotlight.

I asked the Waymo rep whether they allow their cars to park in bike lanes. She said they do, depending on city regulations. Would they comply if the city prohibits parking in bike lanes? She said she would have to get back to me on that. LAWLESS!

Today the Minneapolis City Council's Climate & Infrastructure Committee will be discussing the city's 2-way bikeways and conflicts with right turning vehicles at signalized intersections. Most of these intersections don't have signage prohibiting a right turn through a red light.

Good news for Anders Folk in the Whittier neighborhood: blood thirsty infants are coming to eat your fully developed adult brains.

Iron clad rule of politics: the longer the election goes on, the more mall bombers we must unearth to sustain the effort.
