The NWS intentionally blocked off international observations without issuing any service change notices about it. If anyone in the agency has information on who ordered this change and why, my email address is my name at gmail.

These pages no longer provide international observations. It's a good thing that weather stops at international borders. 😢

BREAKING: Major shakeup in NSF leadership. Brian Stone, who has been performing the duties of NSF director since April 2025, is retiring on Dec. 31. Rebecca Keiser, who has been acting chief of staff, is also retiring, Oct. 31. Unclear who will replace Stone, since O'Neill's nom hasn't moved.

We have landfall… The center of #Isaias has come ashore near Destin, FL around 8:30 PM CDT (0130 UTC) as a category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph and a minimum central pressure of 971 mb.

#Isaias 4pm CT update: A life-threatening storm surge is expected from the Mouth of the Mississippi River to Suwannee, Florida. Residents under evacuation orders should leave immediately and follow advice from local officials.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for San Diego County. This is just the second time a tropical storm watch has been issued in California, after Tropical Storm Hilary in August 2023 www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh...?

Concerning model trends this evening bring (post) Tropical Storm Rachel very close to San Diego on Sunday morning. Even if Rachel makes landfall in Mexico, storm surge could push tides to top-10 record territory in San Diego. Coastal flooding and erosion will probably be damaging in some areas.

7:20 AM CDT Friday Oct 9 Update: Isaias becomes a major hurricane. Data from an Air Force Reserve hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to 120 mph. Isaias is now a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Fol... 🔗 hurricanes.gov

Some important differences between the conventional physics-based models (European and American ensembles are 1st and 2nd panels) and the AI models (Google Deepmind operational and experimental ensembles are 3rd and 4th panels). The differences in both track and intensity are obvious. #Isaias

There is an increasing risk of dangerous wind and storm surge impacts along portions of the northern Gulf Coast. Watches could be required on Wednesday. Residents from Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle should closely monitor the latest forecast updates and ensure they have a hurricane plan in place

NEW: In March the White House released an FY27 budget request that zeroed out the National Science Foundation's directorate of Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE). For months it was unclear what would happen. Now, with FY26 over, the damage to SBE is coming to light. My reporting:

While the Gulf Coast NWS comms issue appears resolved, with the growing tropical risk was seeing way more social media traffic about the radar outages that occurred over the weekend. Feel compelled to share a thread as seeing a lot of misinformation. (1/)

This is... troubling. SCOTUS is allowing the Trump administration to use an error-ridden tool that relies on inaccurate data. This tool has already led to false allegations of non-citizen voting. Now, it could "accidentally" remove legal voters from the rolls, causing real disenfranchisement.

Ari Berman@ariberman.bsky.social

Thanks to SCOTUS GOP-appointed majority (same ones who attended Trump's state dinner last night), Trump admin will use faulty & inaccurate data to wrongly label eligible voters non-citizens & pressure states to remove them from rolls. Sets a chilling precedent www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Remarkable evolution of Hurricane Polo over the past 48 hours as it fluctuated between category 4 and 5 intensity during an eyewall replacement cycle (ERC) and subsequently re-strengthened to 180 mph (155 kt) as of the latest NHC advisory.

Just a couple hundred miles from Mexico's southwestern coast, Hurricane Polo strengthens even further. Polo has recently recorded a central pressure of 892 millibars, making it the second most-intense Eastern Pacific hurricane on record, behind 2015's Hurricane Patricia.

Dorian J. Burnette reposted

Even with very aggressive intensity forecasts from the National Hurricane Center, they have had a hard time keeping with what Hurricane Polo is *actually* doing. This is some EXTREME rapid intensification! On this plot, the thick black line is the observed intensity, colored lines are NHC forecasts.

The slow pace of federal research funding under Trump, coupled with his administration’s mass cancellations of existing grants, have led to severe underfunding of research. As another fiscal year under Trump comes to a close on September 30, NOAA, AHRQ, NSF are far behind in money awarded.

In the eastern North Pacific south of Mexico, Hurricane Polo has rapidly intensified from a tropical depression to a major hurricane in just over a day and continues to barrel toward category 5 strength.

👀 Oof! Last night's 500 mb chart showed quite a few 600 dm values (i.e., you have to go up 6000 meters to get to the 500 mb pressure level). That's just nuts for this time of year! #HeatDome 🥵
