Great thread (read the whole thing here or on his blog), but this is one of my favorite insights from Cory over the years. " You mustn't be afraid to dream a little bigger, darling." - Eames Inception

When they tell us "there is no alternative," what they mean is "stop trying to think of alternatives." To imagine radically is to move beyond the helplessness of prediction: a radical imagination dares to insist that history is what we make, not what happens to us.

I don't know that there is a definitive line to cross that makes you say, "I live in a police state now" but when masked gunmen can routinely brutalize the public, citizen or immigrant alike, with impunity, you have reached that point.

This parallels another obvious flaw with the overvaluation of AI companies in general: it seems one core idea is that there will be a “winner” whose models propel revenues to a large fraction of GDP; in the unlikely event that were to actually happen…

Basically SpaceX & Tesla's price is 10x underlying value on assumption Musk alone can do achieve monopoly pricing & growth for decades into the future, while Musk's erratic behavior assures that any company he runs is doomed to be crushed by concerned democracies making that assumption impossible.

either it’d bury democracy or this critical infrastructure would be nationalized. So the high valuations are based not only on delusions of what LLM technology can do, but also on shorting democracy

It’s striking this doesn’t seem to occur to the people who argue LLMs are going to be as transformative as railroads, given that in most countries, railroads have been nationalized for a large chunk of time and are generally heavily regulated where they are not nationalized

Authors, There is a massive surge in AI-generated scams from people impersonating podcasters or reviewers or marketers offering to promote or boost books. For a fee. Then they disappear. Often from a Gmail account. I know we all want our books to be better promoted, but don't fall for these scams.

4 MONTHS later on the *1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY* of when US Gov first terminated my NIH Director’s award, I received an email gut punch. By terminating research grants like Kelton's to censor views it doesn’t like, the NIH is blocking scientists from work that would advance public health for all of us. We're pushing back. Tell Congress to demand the NIH restore the grants and stop its censorship campaign at aclu.org/nih_censorship_

The 65th Plenary session of IPCC was suspended because the negotiations were going overtime & most small delegations from developing countries (incl. LDCs, SIDS) had to leave on Friday evening. A "plenary" decision taken during the week-end without them would not have been inclusive or fair.

Ho boy, do I have a story for you. The question of how ice breaks has been central to glaciology for well over a century.

Glen@gergyl.bsky.social

Didn't know this was especially controversial. Unsupported vertical ice obviously has a structural limit, determined by the distribution of internal fractures, especially ~vertical ones. Vertically fractured ice becomes a column crushing problem. Details are what's not known, and consequences?
