These scenes aren’t atypical of the area when a king tide coincides with a storm, but flooding like Monday is a rare sight on a sunny day. There were no major waves or wind to push the water into the adjacent roadway. If that were to happen later this winter, the disruption would be much worse.
Melting ice sheets, and expansion of warming ocean water, has already added 8 inches to sea levels along the California coast in the past century. Sea levels will rise feet higher by the end of the century but projections hinge on whether humans slow down or stop burning planet-warming fossil fuels.

Los Angeles and San Diego had their highest coastal water levels in over a century of records during high tide today. (San Diego's record was a tie, but there was a glitch that prevented the peak from being recorded). Top-10 marks from 2026 highlighted are in yellow. @edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social
The high tide in Los Angeles set a new record this morning, based on preliminary data. San Diego tied (no pun intended) its record, but there may have been a data glitch. Slightly higher tides are possible tomorrow.
San Diego and Los Angeles could experience record high tides next week. Model guidance predicts Monday’s tide in San Diego being 2.5ft above a typical high tide. Tuesday will probably come in around 2.6ft, which would be the highest in San Diego history. Record tides are also possible in L.A.

The Four Corners just went through a long week of flooding and weather models predict another deep plume of moisture taking aim at the region in the Nov. 1-2 timeframe. This doesn't look like a long-duration event, but saturated soils will be more prone to flooding from even short duration rainfall.
Surface temperature anomalies are even more anomalous. The sea surface temperature of 66.6°F is nearly 9 degrees above normal. Plots from the California Ocean Observing Systems: enso.caloos.org
There are major (mostly negative) consequences for marine life when nearshore temperatures are this warm. Record high tides will be set in the months ahead. Also major implications for coastal weather: www.sfchronicle.com/california/a...

California will see very high tides up and down its coast next week, as the historic El Niño raises the seas.

I've been working on some tide forecasts with guidance from @edwardsanthonyb.bsky.social My model has an 83% chance of setting a record on Tuesday. Any record will only last a month. The model has a near 100% chance of setting the record in late Nov since the baseline will be 11 cm higher.
NWS San Diego has issued new Coastal Flood Warning for near-record/record-breaking tides and possible widespread coastal inundation in SoCal Sun-Thu. And there's no king tides or major storms in the mix yet...just elevated sea levels from extreme El Nino plus long-term warming.
Coastal flood warning issued: “Numerous roads may be closed. Low lying property including homes, businesses, and some critical infrastructure will be inundated. Some shoreline erosion will occur in the morning hours.” bsky.app/profile/sgx....

Ocean heat — historically warm for this time of year — is drawing tropical fish coastward, killing kelp forests, pushing tides to record high heights and providing extra fuel for storms.

“For those of you who are scuba divers, you’ve probably noted that even on the bottom, at 50 feet, it is 70 degrees … it’s been very, very warm,” Smith said at an Oct. 7 panel. “When kelp is exposed to that warm water for extended periods of time, it literally melts.”
