Tropical Storm #Edouard swirls over land near the Texas-Louisiana border. Radar shows the heavy rain, which is likely to bring some flash flooding.

Although it seems deliberate, the use of the name #Dolly for this storm is purely coincidental. Tropical storm and hurricane names come from 6 pre-determined rotating lists. The name Dolly replaced Diana after the 1990 hurricane season and was first used in 1996.

Tropical Depression Two is expected to slowly strengthen and could become a tropical storm Monday near the Florida Panhandle. Tropical storm conditions are possible there, while heavy rain and flash flooding threaten parts of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana through Thursday.

What’s that swirl on radar? It’s not a tropical storm… yet. It’s a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV), a temporary spin left behind by thunderstorms. It could develop over the next few days, but heavy rain is the main threat for Florida’s west coast for now.
