Disastrous flooding along the San Juan River in the Four Corners region. Here’s some of what I saw today in Shiprock, on the Navajo Nation in northwest New Mexico.

A look at the damage from Saturday's tornado in Santa Fe. The tornado has been rated a high-end EF-1, with 110 mph winds. It traveled 1.4 miles, damaging 10 homes, power poles, and trees. This was Santa Fe's first documented tornado in 55 years. 📸 PNM, City of Santa Fe #NMwx

Long-term stations across the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado had their wettest 2-day period on record from the recent storms. (Yes, those numbers are correct, 2 to 2.5" in two days is record-breaking; the SLV is typically a very dry place!) #cowx

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Historic flooding in Farmington, NM, today. Our KRQE photographer captured this video as the San Juan River reached its highest recorded level, breaking the record from 1909. Dangerous flooding continues downstream toward Shiprock, where river levels will rise tonight. #NMwx

Preliminary observations from the San Juan River at Pagosa Springs show that the flood crest above 15 feet this morning even exceeded the major floods from last October. Still below the flood of record from October 1911, however. #cowx

I point this out every year, and am often told that "surely this cannot be true!" But surveys consistently report similar numbers, and it illustrates why increasing public & private institutional visibility of individual *scientists* (not just "science in the abstract") is actually quite important.

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

Every year, Research!America does a poll that asks, "Can you name a living scientist?" In January 2026, 76% of respondents said "no." Of those who said "yes," 5% named a scientist who was, in fact, dead. www.researchamerica.org/blog/can-you...

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Think about the most intense rainstorm in CONUS history, and think about where it happened... . . . ...did you say northern Pennsylvania? The Smethport, PA storm from July 1942 holds many of the records for short-duration rainfall in the US, and even some world records.

Enjoyed working with the great Jim Smith and others on this paper outlining the "Smethport Challenge". Can we actually understand and simulate convective storms with ludicrous rain rates like what happened in July 1942? It's a very important question for infrastructure design across the eastern US.

Here's a more detailed look at the expected rainfall amounts through Thursday night. See weather.gov for more.

A strong Pacific weather system will bring a deep surge of moisture to the southwestern US Wednesday and Thursday, with periods of widespread showers and thunderstorms expected. A Flood Watch is in already effect for Wednesday and Thursday in much of Arizona. Monitor weather.gov for the latest.

As of the most recent daily NOAA OISST data (19 October), here's a GIF showing the y-axis expansion to capture recent record-breaking values in the Niño 3.4 region.

Kim Wood@drkimwood.bsky.social

Well, here we are again, needing to expand the y-axis range... this time for recent Niño 3.4 SST values. 😩 (There should be a blue dot at the end of the blue line showing the latest daily SST value. It's not visible because it's, well, off the chart.)

This is exactly what ICE said: "Parra-Hernandez ran in front of an ICE vehicle and was struck." Now watch the video. They're no other word for it: They're lying.

Eric Umansky@ericumansky.bsky.social

Watch an ICE agent run down and then run over a man. The man was was then writhing on the ground, saying "You broke my leg! You broke my leg!" Agents didn't help him. And btw, the man wasn't the target of their operation.

seems kind of embarrassing that they throw a big Premier League fan fest in Denver and then the local Denver network just doesn’t show the Man City/Liverpool game as scheduled, in favor of a Broncos pre-game show

If you lose power during Hurricane Isaias and use a portable generator, remember to run it at least 20 feet away from your home. Never run a generator indoors. Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas you can't see or smell and it can kill in minutes.
