I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Most of these game studios are not closing because they're not PROFITABLE. They're closing because they're not showing GROWTH. The system of investor capitalism is ruining literally everything you care about.

Neighbor has this lovely flower. I took a quick pic while walking (therefore=blurry). I think it's Creeping Plumbago?

since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

I will say that I think caring about point #1 requires a reverence for the Supreme Court I do not have. I simply do not think a body that small should have that much concentrated power. One person's cancer diagnosis should not decide the human rights of an entire generation. 81 justices is fine.

Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...

Any and all "'AI'-detection services" are scams. They are just another way for the desperate, greedy companies behind the slop machines to *feed more stuff into their slopmakers*. They are not useful, accurate, or cost-effective. Just cut it out. Stop being taken in by the slop grifters. Jeez.

this is so so wonderful. this is 100% the absolute loveliest vision of gardening, bringing people together & building community through beauty & growing things. I just LOVE this & hope to emulate these folks more & more as I grow older.

Pretty Sweet Black Eyed Susans out in the middle of nowhere. Well, it was somewhere. It was the flower's home.

Oh ffs. No AI. None. Not in the art, not in the copy, not in the emails, not in ANYTHING.

Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

Seems like a good time to note that Barnes and Noble sells individual issues of Clarkesworld, Apex, Lightspeed, Nightmare, Three-Lobed Burning Eye, Uncanny, and other zines, usually for under $5 per issue. Beneath Ceaseless Skies sells some "best ofs" for under $5 as well.

If you're in these states, *TODAY* is deadline to register to vote. Arizona, Arkansas Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas. Even if you think you've registered: doesn't hurt to check! And there's a lot happening across them. A thread with stakes on each. ⬇️

Look, all I wanted was some cute kid art for where my grandkiddo takes a nap at my house. What do I find? AI slop, corporate characters, and beige everything. Beige balloons, beige elephants, beige rainbows.

One little picture isn't enough to brighten up the nap spot, so I resorted to fabric panels. I found two that are adorable at my locally-owned cotton fabric shop. I checked the artists who designed them, and as far as I can tell, no AI.

Then all I needed to do was hem them and hang them up. Now the space is much brighter and cuter. But it shouldn't have been this hard. AI sucks.

I found one artist on Etsy who said she hand illustrates and uses Procreate to digitalize. I looked up Procreate and as far as I can tell, no AI. I bought the cute frog picture.

This was after hours of looking for art online. Frustrated doesn't cover it, folks. It used to be easy to find hand drawn images. I'm sure they're still out there but the mountain of AI garbage is absolutely burying them.

I shopped local retailers, discount stores, online and Etsy. AI slop, slop, slop. "we use hand drawn art and only use AI to finish and make it better" <--no.

We've been eating onions from our garden for a couple months, but I just harvested what was left. Behold! Box of Onions! (Walla Walla Sweet)
