Me to the IRS: To be clear, I’ve paid all the taxes that I’m able to pay. There’s about 5000 dollars worth of taxes that have been withheld for boat payment reasons.

Pope Leo is the first Pope to have ever experienced the US healthcare system, so there's that

More Perfect Union@moreperfectunion.bsky.social

Pope Leo this week called universal health coverage a "moral imperative." He also said: “Health cannot be a luxury for the few,” it is “an essential condition for social peace.”

A presidential memo saying officers carrying out Caribbean boat strikes can’t be prosecuted is a confession the attacks are war crimes. Virtually every lawyer across the political spectrum identifying them as blatant, unambiguous violations of the laws of armed combat is because they’re war crimes.

Greg Sargent@gregsargent.bsky.social

On the horrific news that Pete Hegseth ordered the killing of boat bombing survivors, remember: The Trump Murder Memo "authorizing" the strikes preemptively clears those carrying them out. That's unusual. And we still haven't heard from the commander who resigned: newrepublic.com/article/2032...

Senator Kelly is correct. Plus a Public Service Announcement: KEY section of Department of Defense's Law of War Manual is 18.3.2.1. The VERY rule on the "requirement" to refuse illegal orders gives as its paradigmatic example of what is "clearly illegal: "orders to fire upon the shipwrecked."

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Mark Kelly on the Trump/Hegseth boat strikes: "If orders are illegal, not only do they not have to follow them, they are legally required not to follow them."

They’re simultaneously arguing that soldiers have to follow all orders from the president, legal or not, but they get to ignore orders from a federal judge if they feel they’re not legal.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

KARL: Did you know about the judge's order when you issued your order for the planes to continue? KRISTI NOEM: This is an activist judge. We comply with all federal orders that are lawful and binding.

President Hernandez was responsible for smuggling 500 TONS of cocaine into the United States! He was the top dog; the Pablo Escobar figure! He wasn’t just “selling drugs in that country.”

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

Reporter: You have made so clear how you want to keep drugs out of the US— Trump: Right Reporter: Can you explain why you would pardon a notorious drug trafficker? Trump: If somebody sells drugs in that country, that doesn’t mean you arrest the president

This is gonna seem like a nitpick, but I think it's significant: It's not a professor, it's a graduate TA. Thinking back on my time as a TA thirty years ago, universities use TAs as cannon fodder, asking them to hold certain rigorous lines but reliably failing to support them.

Just before he went into politics, Dr Oz was invited to speak at a Walk for Women’s Health we attended. He talked about cancer screening…more specifically his colonoscopy. Not breast or ovarian cancer. It was cringey. Read the room, bud.

There’s a very surreal conversation I keep having on here where people seem unable to hold two ideas at the same time, and I’m not sure why. It’s simply true that the Big AI platforms like ChatGPT are: 1. Extremely bad for society, in many ways. 2. Very genuinely popular with lots of people.

An absolute disgrace that @ox.ac.uk hosted this celebration of murdering a journalist.

This all-male panel is deciding whether South Carolina women can be charged with murder for their pregnancies — and whether birth control and pro-choice websites stay legal. This a real thing happening today. Don't look away.

there was a moment in 5th grade when a teacher (a very nice one) wanted me to do a demonstration of nuclear fission with toothpicks stuck in gumdrops (and then breaking of the toothpicks?) to symbolize energy release? I very weirdly refused to do it because I did not see the analogy?

And the owner of the paper will repurpose the opinion section the journalist wrote for to propagandize for the regime trivializing his death, while pretending he’s all about “personal liberties.” One might think this included the personal liberty not to be dismembered with a bone saw

Will Oremus@willoremus.com

You can oversee the bloody dismemberment of a Washington Post journalist with a bone saw, and the president of the United States will smile, shake your hand and threaten to pull the license of a news outlet whose reporter asks you a question about it. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/1...

It's 2004. We're ~3 months into my freshman year of college. GWB has just won reelection, in no small part due to fearmongering over gay marriage. I find a gay classmate sobbing in the stairwell about "why do people hate me so much?" It's 2015. 11 years later. Gay marriage is legal nationwide.
