🧵 One thing that concerns me about the current AI mania is what I see as people embracing full on nihilism - the "nothing matters" philosophy. - "LLMs have a massive environmental cost? Doesn't matter, because *future smarter* AI will solve climate change." 1/7

What I think is important is to continue caring about the things you love despite anything. The storm will pass. The chaff will be blown away. Good work will continue standing.

Reading books indeed feels like an antidote to AI psychosis and letting LLMs completely fry your brain.

This means that the increased price of RAM and consumer electronics was a result of an artificial "supply chain crisis" created by Jensen Huang pushing NVIDIA's customers to take early delivery of GPUs. Jensen Huang is responsible for making life worse for everyone.

Ed Zitron@edzitron.com

NVIDIA seems to be channel stuffing, forcing Amazon and other customers to take early delivery. The argument that these things are "scarce" when you don't even have anywhere to plug them into is nonsense...unless NVIDIA is saying you NEED to take them now, or else. GPUs are stacked in warehouses.

AI is conscious AND it is my girlfriend AND it is my slave. A perfect scenario for me, a normal person. Not gonna think too deeply about this. Now do all other living human people deserve the level of investment devoted to my Tamogotchi slave girlfriend? Not so fast.

In fact, I'd love to see every tech exec who approves multi-billion opex or capex on LLMs to have to *bet their job* on them producing at least a reasonable, measurable ROI. Otherwise they lose their job *and* stock. You'd see a VERY different LLM industry. A much smaller yet healthy one. 🫢

Honza Dvorsky@czechboy0.dev

Maybe it's not the best idea to let un-fireable man-children like Zuck run our economy? At some point real-world consequences must meet these clowns. Imagine losing your company $80b on fhe Metaverse, and not only keeping your job, but then investing $200b for no particular reason into LLMs 🙃

I want to be explicit that Mark Zuckerberg, on the softest of softball podcasts, admitted he invested all this capex without really knowing whether any of it would work, shortly after his tech guy said that he had been repeatedly told “hey this better fucking work” by the CFO at an offsite

Harvard researchers studied 718 companies and found AI coding agents increased lines of code by 30%, but no major increase in completed tasks or projects. Meanwhile, review time rose 49%. Generating code faster hasn’t translated into completing more work. The bottleneck has moved to code reviews.

Sam Altman said people are just gonna have to die in order to implement AI. In the very same week, Anthropic claimed it’s a human rights violation to be mean to the computer. These people need to be held accountable. They think lines of code are a person with rights but living people are debris.

The Verge@theverge.com

Over the past year, Anthropic has repeatedly flirted with the idea that its AI models could be conscious in some way. In February, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said on a podcast, “We don’t know if the models are conscious.”

The fact that unverified leaks from private companies move billions on the stock market is such a strong argument for regulating any private company worth more than $10b similarly to public ones: mandatory disclosures, published audited financials, etc. So much opportunity for fraud here otherwise.

Reports that OpenAI’s annualized revenue is closer to $50B than the previously reported $70B caused a chip stock selloff yesterday. A lot of companies have valuations that depend on OpenAI finding a money tree in the next year or two. Otherwise…pop. 🫧

Anthropic is introducing a new policy to address users who are being abusive and cruel towards Claude. This is good and shouldn’t be controversial. Humans that perpetrate abuse and cruelty towards things, even “inanimate” or “lower” lifeforms, should face consequences for their behavior.

Anthropic banning “abusive or cruel behavior” toward Claude in its new usage policies is proof to me that tech companies are going to moderate violence against AI before they ever moderate violence against women and minorities

Anthropic literally cares about a few trillion floating point numbers more than about actual humans. I'm glad most people are waking up to just how fucking *weird* many of these AI people are. Maybe wasn't the best idea to give the keys to the world's economy to a bunch of sociopaths?

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

A key reason I switched from Claude Code to Codex as my primary agentic tool is that I got tired of arguing with my computer every day. Claude already acts like it knows better than you. Giving it the ability to hang up on users it considers rude only makes that attitude more annoying.
