Not sure there is anything with a bigger gap between what people in the football business (including press) care about vs what the general fans care about than the ballon d'Or

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

This is well worth the read and thank goodness someone is raising the alarm. I do want to say some things about revenue raising though, because things aren't always as they appear. The department of finance consulted on changing domestic rating measures twice in quick succession. At a time when

London shouldn’t give Stormont any more money - extra cash has been perversely making things worse for the public. The Executive is an emperor with no clothes: It’s strutting around buck naked and far too many people who know this are silent.

My wife in English and we used to work in same place in California. One day we came in together and an american colleague said Here come the British! I said, but I'm Irish! "Same difference" he said Something something about when people far away argue over their differences and you think... really?

The province of Alberta is voting this week on whether to hold a referendum on separation from Canada.

Obviously the sensible and humane decision. The parties at fault here are the parades commission for carelessness, the LOL for unecessarily pressing a sensitive issue, and J Bryson. I don't actually blame the DUP because politically they kind of had no option but to back the horse once bolted.

The Secretary of State, under his power granted by the 1998 Public Processions Act, has banned the Orange Order from walking the Garvaghy road. That, Gavin Robinson, is the rule of law.

We'll have a full analysis of the Conservatives' proposed inheritance tax cuts tomorrow. But, for now, three charts. 1. Who would benefit from the cuts?

beyond the weird catholics-arent-Christians implication here, I take exception to the whole invoking of religion at all for this point. Aren't atheists capable of 'acting for the greater good' too?

Brendan McNally@brendanmcn.bsky.social

Very odd comment, now deleted, as the Garvaghy road residents are of a Christian background too, and as it happens, Catholic tradition has disobedience to unjust law as a fully orthodox part of its theology.

I understand people are passionate about Irish military neutrality but it's a very conplicated issue imo and hard to get your head around whats right. I definitely don't have the answers but when I try to discuss (trying to be polite), blanket blocking feels harsh

Really enjoying the recent rest is history series on the troubles, I thought I knew a fair bit but didn't realise I was missing a lot of context, however the big issue is my brain struggling to process the way Dominic Sandbrook pronounces 'protestants' with a hard first t.

A significant contributor to the gender pay gap and the continuing financial disparity between men and women is the undervaluing of all of the unpaid care work done by women in Ireland. Women all over Ireland get up early, every morning, and go to work, unpaid and unvalued.

Tánaiste and Minister for Finance Simon Harris has said this year's Budget will support people "who get up early every morning and go to work".

Britain’s original plan for New Zealand had the islands split into three provinces, with nonsensical borders typical of any British colonial project. The provinces were named after Irish ones (the guy who came up with them was an Anglo-Irish colonial officer). These didn’t last for long.

Having described Dublin's Wax Museum as featuring "Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown spitting a jet of water from her mouth while farting on a toilet", I worry this might lead you to presume this was a delightfully heightened bit of absurdism on my part. Dear reader, this is not the case.

Really? Is that it? If this is all that’s come from COBR, it’s pitifully inadequate. As crisis deepens, it beggars belief that there aren’t eg plans to increase resources for the fire service, support for farmers, max workplace temperature, funded community cool spaces & obvs ban on new fossil fuels

People always seem to take opinion polls as destiny. Look back at the last few years in British politics... when was the last period of stability??

Just a few months ago, Nigel Farage and Reform UK looked unstoppable. After sweeping the local elections and topping opinion polls, many believed Reform was on course for government. But has the momentum already begun to fade? Watch the full Fourcast episode now youtu.be/msYbvVgAEH8
