We need to be way angrier than we are. I'm all for adopting the framing from the End Times Fascism book, namely that these people - the techbros - are traitors to the human race.

This is wonderful! As a serial tab-closer I doubt I'd see much overgrowth, but I have multiple friends and colleagues who would be surrounded by a jungle in no time.

I built a fun little Chrome extension that lets plants invade your abandoned tabs the longer you leave them unread. To access them again, you have to slash through the vines 🪚🌿

When people claim there is a high demand for AI, remember: … we were not given a choice. AI was pushed into products we already use. It’s like claiming there’s a high demand for high fructose corn syrup….. or advertisements.

"The removal of human accountability, the disempowering of workers, the inherent conservatism, the centralization and control of knowledge, the fetishization of technology and “progress” for their own sake, [...] are facets of modern fascism and I believe it’s important to call them out as such."

"I belong to a cult. Someone did some research that undermines the core tenets of my cult and came up with a catchy phrase that makes it harder to recruit more people to my cult. This makes me sad."

This book's been eyeing me from my to-read shelf for months; I'm looking forward to finally reading it. (As usual, I'll be joining in spirit as I can't join the meetings due to timezone.)

They get it! > How do you enforce this? > You [can't]. People will still send LLM generated code. This policy makes it explicit that we do not welcome these careless submissions. We have a Code of Conduct that is 80% about [...] what our values are, and 20% about handling unwanted behavior 💯

Adolfo Neto@adolfoneto.elixiremfoco.com

Everyone’s talking about AI, but no one’s actually asking workers how it’s affecting us. So we’ve done it ourselves. Today we are launching the AI Workers’ Inquiry, a new study led by workers themselves, into the way AI is changing work. Read it at go.utaw.tech/ai

When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

This looks amazing! I'd do it myself if I could, but other nature / art / data vis nerds should definitely take a look.

Friends! Can I ask you a favour? My 🐦 + 📊 course starts next week. I'm super excited but registration is worryingly low. Can you share this with your weirdo nature + art + code friends? jerthorp.me/learning

Paul M. Barrett reviews two new books on Silicon Valley's ideological bent — Gil Durán's The Nerd Reich and Quinn Slobodian and Ben Tarnoff's Muskism — and asks whether people are now willing to do what is necessary to resist technofascism.

I received a panicked message from a family member this week asking if "AI" will really cause the extinction of the human race. I did my best to dispel these fears in simple terms, but my anger at the industry leaked through. Perhaps I should have sent them this very accessible article instead.

Really important to understand that AI has not become *more* AI, *real* AI, or *good* AI since the late 70s. It's still a parlour trick. The parlour has just got a lot bigger and the trick a lot more tricksy.

Large Heydon Collider@heydonworks.com

Was doing some research and... wow... 1978.

This is a great thread that highlights what we need to do about "AI".

Evan Greer@evangreer.bsky.social

I really want people to think more like organizers. I'm seeing endless debate, and more than a little conspiracy theorizing, about the motivations behind the big companies' warnings about the danger of AI. And almost no discussion about how we seize this moment to demand the policies we want.

It costs roughly £200K to show an ad to every adult in the UK on Insta, Facebook, X & Google. With £72m in crypto donations, Reform now has enough money to repeat this every week until 2029. Dodgy ads already shaped Brexit, we can't afford to let it happen again. We need to scale up our fight.

This looks amazing!

Very much this. Holding space for refusal of this tech is a key resistance strategy. That means advocating for that option in e.g. school policies (if we can't get a full ban) but also simply being visible in our own refusal, so that others see it as possible.

Please be vocal about not using AI. We have to normalize it. No "I'm not going to say that because it should be assumed. I'm not going to give them this". We don't have time for that shit ideological shit right now. NOW is the time to capitalize on waning favorability. Ppl want human made

AI companies are now getting accommodations that disabled people spent decades fighting for. Jonathan Zong and Frank Elavsky argue this reflects a broader pattern, where accessibility gains become politically possible only once industry needs the same changes.
