This story reveals UT admins see their responsibility as protecting the political fortunes of GOP politicians, with whom they are on a first-name basis. They do not care about students. Not that we needed confirmation after they had dozens of students beaten and jailed in 2024, but still. Ugly.

texastribune.orgInside UT’s response to Bo French remarks about studentsDespite pressure from students and graduates to condemn the remarks as racist, University of Texas officials took a more careful approach.

Expect to see this type of bullshit in many races all over the country. Remember, to a Republican the only legitimate election is one in where their candidate wins.

As I like to say...you are not going to get a social democracy simply by trimming US military expenditures down to 2 percent of GDP.

A big reason why people w/ low incomes don’t share in our prosperity is that we underinvest in economic security programs like unemployment insurance, paid leave, housing, and other benefits. We spend FAR LESS on these programs than our peers do.

ATTENTION CHICAGO: valiantly have we resisted attempts by Dark Forces from the West to distract us with the Deep Dish Pizza Discourse so they can steal our water. They see our strength and have invented a new local pizza discourse to beat us. DO NOT FALL FOR IT! DO NOT ENGAGE IN PIZZA DISCOURSE!

Mike Tanier@miketanier.bsky.social

"Tavern style" just means "pizza in a bar." Bars all over the country have this. That's like saying "Chicago has something special called draft beer."

Like, if you audited _every single transaction_ by every single person in your town, to find an example where they'd gotten away with something? Got the wrong change back, were charged the wrong price, etc. You'd find 100% of people have *some* inaccuracy. Now what if all of those were prosecuted?

We’ve hit a point where tech’s alignment with trump really does mean the laws don’t apply here to them.

Not a single word of this is hyperbolic in the slightest. Buy your friends in cybersecurity the drink or chocolate of their choice right now. We are not doing well

Much of the modern digital world only exists because of human social norms. The Internet's backbone exchanges data at light speed because a bunch of regular folks, essentially, shake hands & agree to do so. Lots of fragile, vital infrastructure only survived because nobody decided (yet) to knife it.

Jason Koebler@jasonkoebler.bsky.social

Security through obscurity is a terrible principle but in practice a lot of things didn't get hacked bc people ignored them, or didn't know they existed, or just generally got missed. AI makes it easy to probe all of these things at scale + makes it easier to find/develop exploits

I am actually genuinely fuming about the cyber guy not knowing what PHP is. I've been fighting for fucking years to be taken seriously as a woman in tech & still regularly get talked down to & some bloke can just turn up on TV as an *expert*, without the first fucking clue.

We don’t have any doctors in my family, but we have absolutely gotten love ones to get help when even some of these signs started regularly appearing.

If your elderly relative routinely blew up at women and insulted them, grossly sexualized other men in public, regularly fell asleep in public mid-meeting repeatedly, and babbled incoherently you'd put him under care and not let him make important decisions.

In any other admin, this would probably be the most outrageous official statement ever made by a sitting FCC director: Strongly implying that the government forbids broadcast networks from reporting on the president's falling poll numbers. (Sorry to paste from twitter but that's where he posts.)

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you
