Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

The fact that we have the instant, 24/7 ability to text, share images, or even video call our friends and loved ones more or less wherever they are on Earth for effectively free is absolutely incredible. (Not to mention directions, wikipedia, translation, a camera, and music, in our pockets 24/7.)

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

i have to say in this day and age i consider any gas powered car a shitbox we had the tech a decade ago to completely remove them from the roads, and their shambolic remains clogging up our streets, polluting our air, and assaulting our eardrums should be an embarassment as a society

TIL I'm a @tailscale.com developer

This is an *insane* claim. Because a piece of software is open source, every user is a developer? What is going on inside the head of the person who wrote this? 🧐

to little surprise, "Tailscale oh no no no no no" turns out to be...uh. well, you can read it yourself. this is an axe-grinding exercise that uses confident-sounding slop as camouflage.

As an amateur carpenter I endorse this message and I will henceforth be stealing the term factory-slop.

jae (hallowed)@fubarchitect.com

i wanna hammer on this too: most of everything you touch exists because industrialization made it cheap; your couch is factory-slop, as any carpenter will gladly tell you. your phone as well if you call me stupid, you'll use industrial slop to do so, even aside from 'bsky uses llms'

Please tell me no certificate issued by these clowns will ever be trusted again

This is an absolutely astounding press release from eMudhra. No apology, a suggestion that the researcher who found their private keys must have used AI, and an attempt to shift blame to auditors... wow. emudhra.com/en/press-release/emudhra-statement-distrust-global-tls-intermediate-root-ca

PHP slop rewritten in Rust when?

I wrote so much PHP in the late 2000s and 2010s. I even remember saying I would never trust JavaScript on the server, it was such buggy junk in the browser. Oh, how the tables have turned.

philpax@philpax.me

starting to see some unironic PHP defence and: none of that, please it is an objectively bad language that was designed wrong from day one. yes, recent versions have improved it. just like C, though, it is all living legacy code that should be phased out

I didn’t know before creating an account on #Wsocial and getting #verified that my #data would be #publicly shown. It’s a shame that they don’t warn anyone who wants to join their #pds about that topic. Do they fear no one will #register? If so, maybe change something…

This is going to be fun

The details are now public, as of two hours ago. bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi... The secret P-384 keys for these intermediate CAs are all zeros except the last 8 bits. All not-updated software can be MITM'ed now. IOT boxes that can't or don't update are now trivially MITM'able forever.

In this spirit, the DMA must be extended to social media. The European social media industry has been asking for this for the longest time. We know that we can take this market by storm if it is ever opened up to competition and freedom of movement.

Teresa Ribera@teresaribera.ec.europa.eu

Europe has made a sovereign choice: digital markets should be fair and contestable. 🇪🇺 Enforcing the Digital Markets Act means protecting that level playing field and creating the conditions for more companies to grow, innovate and compete in Europe.

It's presented in a misleading way (of course, this is W we're talking about, they always have to claim credit where it isn't due) but this is actually a really interesting dataset.

I'm surprised they didn't include stats for MEPs and EU commissioners and staff, where they would actually have done much better as many of those are actually on W.

It's a shame they didn't release the data for further analysis / better presentation. I presume they have contacted all these people to suggest they join W… but either way, perhaps Eurosky should do the same?

It's really remarkable that *none* of these European politicians are on European hosts, and also none (that I see) use official domains as handles. This should be standard practice for official representatives and government entities.

Once again we see that lobbying and grift are more effective at getting recognition than actually doing anything good or useful.

Right-wing billionaires now own the Washington Post, the LA Times, CNN, CBS News, virtually every local TV station, virtually every news radio station, most local newspapers, X, Facebook, Threads, and TikTok. (Did I miss any?) They own almost the entire information environment.

Sherif EA@sherif.mu.social

Love the @bsky.app team but I think they really got their knickers in a twist as we say here about adding an edit button. Really really not as complicated as some people seem to think it is - literally everywhere else on the internet has it.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

Couple that with Starlink cutting off Ukraine and you have all the reasons you need to strive towards not relying on US technology.

Seems bad. Also, while we're trying to stop phishing, ffs please use an email address on the official `bsky.app` domain for your official email addresses instead of some sketchy domain that looks like a phishing attack itself.

Bluesky Safety@safety.bsky.app

We're aware of a phishing attack that has compromised more than 4,500 accounts. The attack spread through posts promoting a fake offer of a government payment. We have temporarily suspended the compromised accounts and are working with their owners to secure them and restore access.

Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

Fuck Meta and their interference in our democracies worldwide. (Also yes, I still have Facebook and Whatsapp accounts because it's the only way to communicate where I live 😢)

Zelenskyy that restrictions on Starlink systems remain. Interceptor drones can't function, logistics and operations hobbled. The maximum speed is 161 kph; "exceeding this limit causes the Starlink connection to cut out completely, resulting in the loss of the drone." www.ft.com/content/e267...
