I'm going out on a limb here and suggest that we dump retros (as usually done) altogether. I see zero value in all those ridiculous games and rituals the coaches seem so enamored of, and in any event, a retro is a conversation, not a formal meeting. Instead, let's improve continuously. 1/6

"Despite massive investments...[AI] has delivered zero financial payoff to corporate America outside of tech. With no impact on the bottom line, mainstream corporate America is pulling back and starting to view token spending not as a source of growth but as a cost center that weighs on margins."

This analyst's report from Apollo about AI uses the term "S&P 493" to refer to the "S&P 500 minus the Mag 7" - because if you take out the AI companies, the S&P 500 is tanking. www.apollo.com/wealth/insig...

It’s a shame NSW Trains’ regional arm is so tight on rolling stock. I’m on a full train to Canberra, and there’s nothing they can do to add capacity. And the New Regional Fleet will have even less capacity, unless they do something radical.

These bloody things are a good test of how well-sealed your home is. I assume everyone else’s is failing as bad as mine is?

One of the best technical articles I’ve read in years. Stewart Brand’s classic book “How Buildings Learn” has shaped my attitude to the way systems change for most of my career, and this piece gives some great new things to ponder.

My thoughts on the current state of AI driven software development, why I'm no longer concerned about a runaway intelligence explosion, and what I think is a far worse outcome we could be walking into maevyn.codes/decoherence

The food is mostly terrible, but it’s safe and accessible. If literally nothing else, their multilingual self service terminals make them incredibly useful for getting your calories in a foreign country. Relied on them a lot when I visited the Netherlands and Germany.

An AI company now lets cops take a photo and nearly instantly figure out what specific home it was taken in, using only clues in the photo itself, and is clearly pulling data from sites like Zillow and Airbnb. www.404media.co/ai-company-l...

Bloomberg: "It’s now more expensive to hire a tanker from the US to China than to launch a rocket into space. That ocean journey runs about $80 million compared with $74 million for a standard commercial launch. The eye-watering prices are the result of a global tanker shortage that's getting worse"

Very sad to hear that Margaret Hamilton has passed away. Here's a short thread about her role in the Apollo mission, and her lesser-known work on the simulations that led to the discovery of Chaos Theory. 🧪 👩‍🔬 ⚛️

In general, if you’re using LLMs to analyse LLM-generated work, just stop. Cut your nonsense requests for paperwork that encourages people to use LLMs to create it.

Kevin J. Kircher@kevinjkircher.com

We're in the middle of a race to the bottom, where authors use LLMs to generate more and more proposals, so funders use LLMs to screen proposals to keep up with increasing submission volumes. At some level of "LLMs evaluating LLM-generated submissions," you've gotta ask what we're even doing here.

The Roosters defence line moves faster than Usain Bolt. Either they’re going too early, or they’re breaking General Relativity. Pretty much impossible to attack against. #nrlgf

If you need tools like Jira, the odds are that you're not working with agility—where we adapt what we're working on to incorporate lessons learned as we work—at all. No shop that works with any agility has the level of bureaucracy that requires tools like Jira. 3/3

If you are "writing a user story," you're already in trouble. A "user story" is exactly that, the user's story. They're the ones who "write" the story, not you. A user story is not a code word for a waterfall up-front specification. A "story" describes your user's work, not yours. 1/4

If your solution to system failures is "tell developers to be more careful," you don't have an engineering strategy. You have a wish. And wishes don't scale. As humans, we are fundamentally fallible. We make mistakes. 🧵 (1/6)

I understand that funding bodies want to go all in on AI as the shiny new innovation thing. But if all the grants start going to AI at the expense of everything else then the research sector is going to end up looking like a farm with dozens of threshers hacking away in a field with no wheat.
