Climate emissions resulting from approving drilling at Rosebank, expanding Heathrow airport, watering down UK’s EV targets, cutting heat pump grants would be 402m tonnes of CO2 over the next 25 years Greater than the annual emissions of 106 coal plants www.theguardian.com/environment/...

theguardian.comBurnham in danger of sleepwalking into climate disaster, say campaignersLetter to PM argues series of wrong choices on North Sea oil, Heathrow, EVs and heat pumps will scupper net zero plans

Not going to be a climate-literate progressive budget, is it? In the cycling industry, when a brand changes essentially nothing about a bike model from year to year, but tries to kid us otherwise, industry commentators call it a 'BND' (Brand New Decals [stickers]) event. Bracing for a BND budget.

Electrifying cars is very much not a silver bullet, not only in terms of transitioning to a low carbon, post-oil society, but also and especially in terms of public health and equitable use of public space. But EVs are 'less worse' than their ICE cousins in a number of ways, including in this way:

Jan Rosenow@janrosenow.bsky.social

What most people don't know: when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it. Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels. Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%. Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%. That's why we don't need to replace fossil energy one for one.

"What makes these experiences feel related to me isn’t that a bicycle is somehow inherently queer; it’s that both can put you in the position of being treated as though your presence requires an explanation." This is such an insightful article.

"Why do aggressive men in cars want to yell at queer people, women, and cyclists? Cyclists feel like the oddball in this list; two of these are about sexual politics, and the third is about… transportation?" #motonormativity ✍️ @jesusurbanist.bsky.social jesusurbanist.substack.com/p/what-queer...

I'm *100%* into the idea of a workplace psychometric based on indie bands' members' personality traits. "Ah, Colin, have a seat. Results are back; I'll take you through them: your responses locate you as a somewhat monosyllabic introvert who hides behind a long fringe, with a penchant for cheese."

As David goes on to say, "It turns out that everyone wants individual regulation even while complaining about the cumulative impact."

David Henig@davidheniguk.bsky.social

Gosh, why has nobody thought of this before? Spoiler alert. They did. I worked for it once. It didn't control the growth of regulation. Because, like this paper, it didn't consider the demand side for regulation. From every single political actor. www.kcl.ac.uk/sfg/assets/g...

Illustration of current Paris urban planning trends: this is an avenue Daumesnil before and after Where did the cars go ? Well, Parisians owning a car has also gone down: in 1990, 46,3% of homes owned a car. In 2019, that number decreased to a third of Parisian homes (according to l’INSEE)

Data from Santé publique France shows that, between 2010 and 2019, the annual number of deaths in Île-de-France attributable to prolonged exposure to PM2.5 fine particulate matter, one of the main air pollutants, fell from 10,350 to 6,220, representing a 40% decrease.

I love charts like this, as they remind us that good policy is possible AND successful There’s a similar trend for Paris and indeed there’s no secret to it: it’s all urban planning to improve public transport and incentivise an overwhelming adoption of it, and also reintroduce much more greenery

The last thing we need is a business-as-usual Budget. This should be a Budget to make life affordable. To tax extreme wealth and profits. To invest in our long-term climate resilience. This is the scale of change Britain desperately needs. Only the @greenparty.org.uk has a plan to deliver it.

We don’t need a business-as-usual Budget. We need a Budget to tax extreme wealth and make the UK affordable. This is the scale of change Britain desperately needs – and only the Green Party can deliver it.

“In some sense, the absolute numbers of the heat-related deaths estimated across the 854 urban areas are indeed staggering,” said Malcolm Mistry .. who co-authored the study. “But perhaps what is even more alarming is the proportion of these deaths that we attribute to anthropogenic climate change.”

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Heat killed a record 50k people in European cities this summer, new research suggests, with scientists blaming climate breakdown for 2/3rds of the deaths. Morgues and funeral homes filled with bodies from June to August as the heat added by planet-baking pollution cut short an extra 32,000 lives…”

...and, of course, Liz Truss' "bold" Mini Budget
