Sometimes the future makes you want to vomit. Perhaps to scream. You feel sick to your stomach, like you're sinking, falling, collapsing. It is a cold feeling to understand its shape and scale as it stands before you, pitiless and blind, your grief but an atom within it.

And so you can only suffer from the existence of other possible worlds. One may hope dearly that, if they can be said to exist, their inhabitants feel some gratitude for our failures.

And yet you must continue and live with it. A sacrifice was made and a piece of you lies shattered with it. You must then trudge forwards and soon it shall fade from memory. You hope there won't be too many more.

Sometimes the future makes you want to vomit. Perhaps to scream. You feel sick to your stomach, like you're sinking, falling, collapsing. It is a cold feeling to understand its shape and scale as it stands before you, pitiless and blind, your grief but an atom within it.

You wish things could have been different. You try, feebly, to trace out different paths. Perhaps there was a different tradeoff one could have made. Sometimes this is an illusion. But, uncomfortably often, it appears true. Though the aggregate may be immobile individuals may move beneath it.

You dream of grand sacrifices. To burn the future in a trade for some perfect stasis. To make the world dance about that singular moment together. Perhaps there could have been eternal happiness.

this sounds like basically nothing if you read into it. h/t to @vgel.me for a good take on it

Replying to @demigirlboss.win

Maybe. I somewhat suspect that if all the models from all the vendors don’t have backdoors *yet*, they soon will. In particular, anything cloud hosted in the US can just turn directly into a manual universal remote control at government request. Literally nothing stopping it.

Maturing as a software engineer doesn’t mean writing fewer Horrors, it means knowing when to write A Horror and how to construct the proper containment zone around it

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

the ideal combination is insane ambition and formal structure, without the second as scaffolding it collapses into slop or endless gastown-style epicycles

Ethan Mollick@emollick.bsky.social

My general advice for using AI for any purpose is to ask yourself: "how do I make what I am doing even more ambitious?" You do this over and over until you either hit a wall and thus learn the shape of the jagged frontier (useful!) or you find out that the AI can do more than you think (common!)

It's an absolute disgrace that anything significant in our lives ever turns on an election. If your "rights" are only secured by the state, then whether you get genocided or not turns on who runs the state each electoral cycle. Freedoms are secured only insofar as we impose *costs* on the state.

SpaceTessContinuum@eigenvalue.bsky.social

I do not think that we should have democratic control over every aspect of our lives. The point of human rights and limited government is a stronger guarantee than simply "Currently a majority of the populace thinks I should have them". This should not be a hot take.

I see autistic masking discourse going around again. Neurotypical social norms *are* understandable. Acting neurotypical is doable if high effort (my mom is like this). You can get a long way by being a kind of weird that doesn't rub people the wrong way, which is much easier. But it hinges on this:

you’re nuts if you’re not using adguard or pihole or something tbqh, as well as using separate subnets for these things. my samsung has the second most blocked requests second only to a windows gaming PC lol. not even the cheap IoT devices compare

I've been meaning to get around to posting the full details, so what the hell - why not get it out while it's still Vuln Week: Anthropic's mech interp driven security model is built on a fundamentally incorrect assumptions. Let's dive in, starting with this paper: www.anthropic.com/research/nex...

About a year ago, I got really into making glitch art exploring the edge cases & failure modes of machine cognition. This had some unexpected applications. Here’s the result: recursion.wtf/posts/claude... I've shared the relevant logs & artifacts with Anthropic, and the matter is under review.

i think vagueposting about vulns because you got into an argument with a maintainer is poor posture

hailey@hailey.at

huh? software that is open source has always had channels for submitting information about security issues. PHP is open source and…people collaborated with them on the disclosures. you’re under no obligation to do work for them, but not even emailing them to explain your findings is not it.

What a charming little ecosystem! Tiny swimmers switch direction when they grow big enough, sprouting long streamers that trail behind them. When a swimmer runs into a pellet it repeatedly 'pecks' at it, losing streamer length until finally being absorbed.

basically if you have an idea that you want to be able to spread to other people, politics or journalism or pretty much anything, it has to be AI-friendly (no paywall, no crawler blocking) and you have to chill out about copyright. surprisingly few understand this

do we need to remind the class which company is advocating for preventing the use of models that are cheap and actually nearing fraction of penny prices, and also are capable of doing cyber defense? can anyone remember?
