A war that isn't a war, documented with videos that may or may not be real, funded by elected leaders who are neither for nor against it, is the most dystopian thing that's happened in my lifetime
Maybe I'm kirking out but the unreality of this war is wild. People posting that thousands of Kurds are fighting the regime for the CIA, while the Kurds say it isn't happening. Every video of a missile attack I just have to assume is AI whether it is real or not.
Carter:
"It is personal animosity. It is retribution. Literally, the President of the United States" said in the middle of this "chaos": "Minnesota, you day of retribution is here."
"That's CRAZY. How can that NOT violate the 10th Amendment?"
I just want to say for the record that when the history books are written centuries from now, I believe the election of Donald Trump in a free and fair election in 2024 will go down as one of the most senseless and self-destructive own goals in human history
Every legal story now is either

I don't think the Justices understand the extent to which they are playing with fire. The more they do this, the more District Courts will engage in open disrespect of the Supreme Court, because what other response is there to open disrespect directed at them? That's bad for the Judiciary, period.
it's stunning the way you almost forget how many opportunities this corrupt mess of a country had to put an unremarkable grifter away before he could do significant harm
For a far-right ideologue, "Prove me wrong" comes along with the intention to refuse to acknowledge any proof of an idea one disagrees with. The point is to put on a show of not being proven wrong, and to use this bluff to convince people that the far right wins the debate.
I am a *lawyer who practices federal law.* Several times a week I see a headline that makes me think "there's no way the President can do that, right?" and I look into it and it turns out that maybe he can because Congress ceded some of its power in the What's the Worst That Could Happen Act of 1983
My prediction is that in that scenario, he blames the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which puts out employment data. Calls them corrupt, run by Democrats, out to get him. Fires people there, insists their numbers cannot be trusted, White House puts out its own fictitious data to make Trump look good
For the millionth time, this is not a mass movement, it’s a faction that is taking advantage of undemocratic features of our constitutional structure and outright violence to punch way way above its weight
OK, I've read the injunction opinions once. I'll read them again and think about them some more. For now:
This Court either doesn't think they're staring down fascism, or they do. At this point, I'm not sure what would be worse. Because either way they are making law that helps fascists.
*Biden tries to forgive student loans*
SCOTUS: Whoa there, that is, uh, a major question. Which means you can't do it.
*Trump revokes part of the constitution*
SCOTUS: Obviously, we got to give the President the benefit of the doubt on this one.
When was there a protest when, in retrospect, things would have turned out better if a couple ppl in the crowd had been carrying guns?
This is a textbook example of how, when the shooting starts, its almost impossible to tell who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.
Three civilians brought guns to a non-violent protest march. A bystander is shot dead by a peacemaker when he opens fire on a person lawfully carrying. So we have a near shoot out by "good guys" with guns and a bystander fatality. Will Utah amend its law? Never!
We’ve normalised a political climate where mocking your own constituents for being queer, Palestinian, or visibly different is a winning move. That’s not democracy functioning. That’s epistemic decay, where truth and dignity are replaced by clicks and clout.
Trump on China: "They made a trillion dollars with Biden selling us stuff. Much of it we don't need. Somebody said, 'oh, the shelves are gonna be open.' Well, maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more."
Angel of the Lord: He is not here, He is risen, just as He said.
Come and see the place where He lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead.
Alito: Okay, first of all, this violates ALL sorts of rules
Thomas: This was a LAWFUL execution, who is God to interfere
Friendly reminder. In the United States, criminals are entitled to due process. Even if you pay hush money rig an election, steal top secret documents, or incite a mob to overthrow the government; no matter how egregious your crimes, you’re entitled to due process.
I see a lot of people falling into the "this is pointless" trap, and I can only say it so many ways — though I suspect I will have to write something specifically about it on this front — but the bottom line is that we must expect compliance. Anything less is just making noncompliance easier.
If the U.S. government is going to take the position that, once removed from the United States, folks can’t be brought back, then it sure seems to me that federal courts should be reflexively and categorically barring *all* removals until they’re 100 percent certain that the removals are lawful.
Am I reading this right? This EO purports to sunset essentially _all_ energy and environmental regulations, and require the agencies to re-do their regulations every 5 years? Because that's fucking insane.

The corollary of “with great power comes great responsibility” is “with no power comes no responsibility” and what we’re discovering is that most of our institutions and leaders fear responsibility more than they want power, and will happily cede the latter to avoid the former
Trump has said many times that he thinks trade deficits are fiscal deficits. He sees an imbalance and thinks that country OWES US MONEY AND ISN'T PAYING. An under-reported part of his insane worldview.
📚 The Department of Education is crucial for shaping a brighter future for our children and our communities! ✨ It provides essential resources, promotes equity in education, and ensures every student has the opportunity to succeed.
The institutional Democratic Party is guided by an almost pathological level of conflict avoidance in almost every direction. “What can we do to make the least number of people mad?” is just a bankrupt way to operate.
When will they learn that bipartisanship and decorum aren't intrinsically valuable? When will they realize that they'll *never* be afforded the same courtesy by the GOP when the shoe is on the other foot?
But as a silver lining, Loper Bright sure seems to say that agencies' policy positions won't matter so much when Trump-driven rules are taken to court, right?
Unless, of course, Loper Bright isn't actually a principled decision and the real principle is "Chevron Doctrine for me but not for thee"...
I've been waiting and watching for any reason to praise a Trump policy position - in his IVF EO I finally found one. It's a shame it's followed up immediately with an insane power grab for the executive branch (Ensuring Accountability EO).
1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%.
I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

Does anyone know of a reliable source that has estimated how much litigation defending the various Trump EOs will cost? All this talk of purported "waste" makes me wonder how much $ the govt will waste claiming the 14th amendment doesn't say what it clearly says, for instance.
This is the most obvious point, but it's still important to note: The first weeks of Trump II have completely exposed deep Republican hypocrisy on a whole host of issues including global elites, unelected bureaucrats, respect for law enforcement, "the swamp," and even email server security.
Having watched with growing alarm the developments of the last 24 and 36 hours in Washington, I thought I’d take a stab at how the US media would cover this story if it was happening in a foreign country. Here’s that story that should be written this weekend: www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...
