"Which essentially amounts to: instead of producing something flawed and human you made something that a lot of people are not going to look at out of principle, and which (having seen plenty of LLM-written text at this point) I know is just going to cap out at 'barely adequate' in quality anyway."

Really good piece about the intrusion of AI into interactive fiction spaces.

I understand the intention here, and it's a good one, but the reposts overwhelmingly remind me of institutions USers will defensively cite in defense of their patriotism. Objectively good, but progress isn't inevitable or invulnerable - how many of these have been subverted in the last 10-20 years?

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Like, I hate always being the doomer as much as the next person (probably?), but maybe if people were listing off wins from *this millennium*, I too would enjoy a respite from abyss-gazing. And from feeling like I'm being gaslit about enshittification. 🫤

Hey, I’m just asking questions. Ignorant questions, bigoted questions, questions that have been repeatedly answered for many years. Sorry, but I’m not listening to answers right now; I’m far too busy asking questions. It’s called being intellectually curious.

You don't beat a regime by showing up when it's convenient for them. You have to be an unignorable headache. You have to have four times the observers when ICE acts. You need to be reminding the National Guard in DC they are outnumbered 100 to 1. You need to resist beyond just exasperated posting.

I‘m far from an AI doomer, but it is amazing how many serious voices — on LinkedIn, no less! — are sharing stories about how AI slop is quickly becoming one of the top problems they see in academic writing and research “AI will 10x our research!” doesn’t seem to be surviving encounters with reality

"We shouldn't be so quick to condemn or resist abuses of authority & privilege, because they're nowhere near as bad as the worst predictions people kept making, and we should encourage the lesser of two evils!" is such a tiringly common, 'boiling frog'-ass, Hollywood morality, 'centrist' argument. 😒

This line from Ross Douthat’s final NYT column is something you see all the time from the soft-MAGA right. Sure, Trump’s *most* alarmist critics weren’t correct, but that’s basically true of every president. Trump’s *median* critic did in fact predict his presidency pretty accurately.
