ICE technology is a dead man walking

John Hanger@jrfhanger.bsky.social

Good morning with good news: EVs in UK had best month ever in September & were 45% autos sold! Full-electrics (BEV) surged 36% to a record & were 28% of sales. Plug-in hybrids were 17%. Chinese EVs are available in UK. UK is world's 7th largest auto market. electrek.co/2026/10/02/u... #energysky

I just installed a home charger for a used EV i just switched to. Next up: balcony solar. You converted me into a sicko. But, the panels I'm looking at aren't approved for a battery yet? How did you setup panels with a battery?

ah I see. well you can generally plug any solar panel into any battery power station, so long as it doesn't exceed the voltage limits of the solar charge controller. but that might not be necessary with a balcony solar setup. what state are you in?

I'm becoming more and more convinced that the technology is just superior, putting environmental concerns aside. Our EV is just better than our other cars.

I think if US charging had been prioritized *before* car production would spontaneously support it, the demand would have significantly have survived the subsidy cut. To this day you watch ev reviews on U tube and the reviewers are constantly pouring significant effort into *planning* charging.

Full-EV Surge! Fifteen countries had full-electric vehicles (BEV) at 30% or higher of auto sales for period of 6-months ending in August 2026! Another 10 were at 20% BEV or higher! Those numbers do NOT include Plug-in Hybrids (PHEV). ember-energy.org/latest-insig... #energysky

boy Trump fucked the American auto industry. first he yanks their EV subsidies, leading them to slash production and write off tens of billions in investment, then he jacks up the price of oil by 50%, leading to skyrocketing EV demand going almost entirely to China bc GM et al left the market

Could the business geniuses have NOT written off tens of billions in investment in EV production, just because this one president is having a tantrum? Do they do any market research?

Remembering how Trump had service members down on their knees last month rolling out the red carpet for Xi, who had plenty of reasons to smile.

Not only has GM not left the market, they're the only OEM that hasn't largely pulled back on EVs: Ford killed the Lightning, Honda took billions in losses to write off every EV, Toyota makes 1 BEV, VW switched its TN plant from ID.4 to ICE Atlas. Meanwhile, GM revived the Bolt (& nobody's buying it)

I think the the reason nobody is buying the Bolt is because it’s possibly the most boring car imaginable. A Rockport walking shoe with wheels. Also, the dealers don’t have any interest in them because they are, by and large, chairs of the local Republican Party.

Obvs repealing the federal tax credit hurt US EV sales but GM still has a bunch of current EV models and will sell >100K EVs in 2026

don't it feel great? especially if you get to pass one of those MAGA dickhead lifted diesel trucks with the flags and huge tires

Yes, but also any automaker that didn't have a 10-20y fossil phase out roadmap that included contingencies for political pendulum swings is reasonably assumed to be run by delusional fart sniffers.

yeah that's fair. Ford gave up temporarily, but GM saw its cheaper models' sales collapse due to the tax credit repeal before they could get a chance to compete with BYD bsky.app/profile/rbd....

It very much feels like a “get what you deserve” moment that will nonetheless be ignored by everyone who should actually learn from it.

Sorry, we spent 50 years teaching MBA bros and morons that "stock price go up NOW" is the only consideration for a corporation

I was worried that rooftop solar was dead but I’ve re-engaged on it and it looks like the companies have figured out a way to make it work through leasing. Until our local utility changes the rules for metering again.

It’s almost like he’s corrupt and using the US government to make a handful of people fabulously wealthy at the expense of everyone and everything else, launching the US into a self-inflicted economic, political and environmental crisis.

Trump did fuck them, but GM has not left the market at all. Why do people on here keep saying that? Their Buick line in China is entirely EVs. Chevy and Cadillac sell over a dozen EV models in N and S America. They would sell more in the US but (see Trump) Ford is behind GM, but same situation.

You’d think, given all of the trillions of dollars and blood lost in wars related to oil interests, that America would invest heavily in renewables and EVs. Self-destruction seems to be the chosen course. No greater value than the dollar.

The giddy enthusiasm with which carmakers abandoned climate science, financial sense, and decades of R&D because one idiot gave them permission…

It's not most Carmakers, it's primary GM and Ford, and they didn't ask Trump for permission, they directed this effort and are constantly working to undermine EV adoption, improved fuel economy, more affordable options for American families at the expense of those families heath- they're the baddies

theguardian.comSenators urge Ford to disclose suspected lobbying over Trump’s climate rollbacksSheldon Whitehouse adds auto giant to investigation after US president claimed CEO requests changes to regulations

Given that they gain power when economic conditions make eggs expensive when the opposition is in charge, what incentive do they have to leave a functioning economy for the opposition to inherit?

Saw a very nice looking E-SUV in Mexico with the Chevrolet brand. Called Spark (a name used on earlier e-models). Built in China for the Latin Am. market. I do think in the US & Canada the industry deserves blame for dragging the feet domestically on EV’s, instead pushing IC vehicles at rednecks.

Sure. OTOH, American cars were globally infamous as poorly-built archaic behemoths long before Trump arrived. Trump is the symptom, the USA is the disease.

Trump will go down in history as the person most responsible for accelerating worldwide electrification and transition to clean energy and EVs. The rest of the world is moving on to EVs and clean energy at light speed due to Trump's insane war. The US is only about 25% of the global auto market

Strange how trump's war in Iran suddenly led to a surge in EV sales. You'd think trump had investments in EVs.😍

I'm old enough to remember the absolute outage on the right about "picking winners & losers" because the government made a loan to Solyndra and they went under. This policy flip-flop on EVs, coupled with soaring gas prices will cost Detroit and US consumers BILLIONS.

Chinese Automakers make a superior product! instead of learning from them or simply *allowing* consumers access them in the free market there’s been a bipartisan effort to enter an industry death spiral

I partially blame democrats for not coming out immediately after Trump announced the regulations going away and saying that the regulations and timelines would be immediately reimplemented as soon as a democrat retakes the White House so they might as well keep with the planned timeline.

And lobby to kill or retard EV adoption and push relentlessly to loosen fuel economy standards, all working in concert to maker American families poorer and sicker. They're the baddies.

on that topic I noticed a god damn Silverado EV here in Reykjavík, all nine thousand pounds of it. and they said GM couldn’t sell cars overseas

If I could buy an American BEV pickup here in Sweden, then I would, if I could afford it of course. My current American ICE pickup is more than 10 years old. Maybe by the time I can afford one they will be available here. I’m not kidding. I would buy one.

I had some hopes for the Ford Lightning when it was being tested in Norway. But it maybe seems to have vanished?

they stopped making it when Trump got reelected. however there is a new smaller one supposedly coming out early next year

I will say it’s not all that different from a big SUV. there are a gazillion Land Rovers here that are just as huge

"rich Icelanders love America" was one of the things he told us. Caveat he also said climate change wasn't a big deal because "look how big that glacier is".

Just anecdotally it's insane how quickly the spread of (mostly) Chinese and Korean EVs has been here in Australia the last couple years. Went from Tesla being the only EVs you'd spot to some of the most common cars around basically overnight

Being in London and Paris last week it was encouraging and also sort of jarring to see how much further along on electrification they are. So many EVs on the road, fleet vehicles/buses/trash trucks electrified, charging infrastructure more developed. We are being left behind

whenever one of my friends' ICE cars is in the shop for a $1,000+ repair on something my EV doesn't even have, it's all i can do not to die from smugness. or when they complain about gas prices. stop. i can't get any more smug. you could've bought an EV, dumbass. they were $7,500 off under biden.
