Dude, it's disgusting that Apple is making this so hard for us. The add-to-homescreen affordances are pure garbage. Working on this right now, and it's infuriating.

...so ChromeOS or the now defunct Firefox mobile OS* *technically that OS still exists on certain feature phones mainly in India as a proprietary fork KaiOS I think by Jio also there was the modern Nokia banana phone sorry for the rabbit hole

everyone forgets that apple tried to do this from day 1 of the iphone, but the web wasn't ready almost 20 years later we're just barely starting to get there

only recently has the web grown the primitives (wasm, webgpu, opfs, webtransport) that it needs to compete with native, and the abstractions that will lie above that (app runtimes, ui frameworks) are largely unbuilt native will fall in time; when the web comes they won't be able to stop it

I'm not saying it necessarily needs to *replace* native, but I think a large percentage of apps can just be PWAs at this point, and the only thing stopping them are the OS stewards

Native wins on retention every time. PWAs close the gap but native is still where users actually stay. The install rate doesn't lie.

reality on android. snd inconsistent experience ranging from indistinguishable-from-native to nearly-unusable
