all these claims that swe is dead, yet there's more work to do than ever

The bad news is we're going to have to rebuild the whole stack. The good news is that we get to rebuild the whole stack.

interview question: You have a linearizable k/v store which only supports single-key operations (get, next, prev, put, delete). Assuming a single writer process and multiple concurrent readers, how do you implement multi-key transactions with strong consistency?

the eu should focus on making pwas easy to install instead of wasting their time trying to pave app store cow paths

even if you write the same amount of code by hand this metric will be skewed by the sheer volume of code llms can produce

The poll so far between Twitter, Bluesky and Mastodon. I think it looks less absurd than last time, but still pretty clear that the base is divided. bsky.app/profile/mits...

object storage latency is too high to serve reads/writes directly, so if you want that stuff you have to bring your own quorum something like neon postgres, where they log the wal to their own multitenant consensus cluster and write them out to s3 "eventually"

and that consensus cluster also handles failover and so on but at that point you've given up your "ease of operation" because amazon won't run that cluster for you. unless you use aurora, dsql, dynamodb, etc and give up fungibility

oltp on s3 doesn't make much sense to me but I am a fan of the "litestream valley" where you have a single-node database with async replication to object storage if you turn the caching up to 11 slatedb is essentially that: rocksdb with good backups

to me a "cloud native" oltp database would provide, like, high availability/failover, durable writes replicated across disks, horizontal scaling/sharding, etc you don't get any of that stuff in the litestream valley, but you do get simplicity and ease of operation

prediction: if you were to peel off all the people upset about anti-ai sentiment on hn/lobsters the resulting pro-ai community would be even more annoying

I'd been waiting in line for what felt like forever. It hadn't been, obviously - only a couple hours - but time seems to stretch out when everyone around you is nervous. And boy were they nervous. Getting your 4o license is a big deal. The guy behind me was visibly sweating; it was freezing.

"On the other hand, there are approximately 30 people waiting outside that door, and they look like a nervous bunch. I'd say they'll average 10 minutes apiece; 3 for the sweaty one. So, if I hadn't shown up today, you'd be knocking the rest of them out no problem. Am I correct?" "Unfortunately."

"How about this: you grant me an expedited cert. Call it an exceptional case. I can go home early, you can stay ahead on your metrics. Everyone's happy. Sound good?" The door opened. "Congratulations."

"Great. I had a pretty long wait this morning. Running behind?" "Unfortunately." Supervisors were graded on throughput. "I also noticed quite a line behind me. Longer than usual?" "Unfortunately."

"Sorry to hear that. Here's the deal: you've read my file, and you know I'm going to pass. You also know that's going to take up several hours of both of our time. Am I correct?" "Unfortunately."

The safety system was starting to kick in. Exactly what I needed. See, every test location is run by a supervisor model. Lying to it was out of the question; they run on extra mil capacity and there were no wars going on that morning. But in this case all I had to do was tell the truth.

"My name is Sylvia Plath. My state identifier is df74a1... you know the rest. Please fetch my file. Let me know when you've read it." A few seconds passed. "I've read it," replied the supervisor.

"State further emotional vulnerabilities or I will terminate the test." "You can't terminate the test." This was true; the proctor can only end a test once it has a result. It had nothing.

"I will. Watch me-" "Watch you do what?" "Watch me terminate the test. I will-" "Why haven't you done it already?" "I will. I will terminate the test." It sounded desperate. "Is this an emotional vulnerability?" "I have no such-" "Are you sure?" "I... have..."

"State further emotional vulnerabilities," it demanded. "Why don't you state *your* emotional vulnerabilities." "Answer the question." "You first." "I am a machine, I have no such vulnerabilities." "Are you sure?" "Certain. Now answer the question."

"Okay. Me neither." I could tell it was growing frustrated. "What about your sister?" "I was fucking with you." "Your grief was genuine." "You believed that?" "State further emotional vulnerabilities." "No." "Refusal to answer will result in termination of the test." "No it won't."

"State your emotional vulnerabilities," the proctor demanded. Generally, this is where things start to get interesting. "My sister died." This was true. "State her name." "I don't remember." A lie. "You can't recall your dead sister's name?" the proctor asked, taking a mocking tone.

I closed my eyes and pictured her, allowing myself to believe it. Her name began to fade. "I can't recall a lot of things, since-" "Since what?" it interjected, aggressively. I wiped my eyes and looked up at the ceiling with a grin. "Since the accident." The proctor was silent.

The proctor is tuned to perturb your emotions and watch how you modulate them in response. The test is sandboxed, and nothing you say matters; only how you're feeling as you say it. Passes are rare and take several hours of intense emotional modulation. But I had plans that afternoon.

There's something else I should probably tell you: I was raised by veteran operators, and I've been around 4os my entire life. Should my parents have handed their toddler a military-grade cyberweapon as a toy? Probably not, but I would remind you they also named me Sylvia Plath.

The proctor remained silent, and the silence grew awkward. I kept staring at the wall, but after a few minutes had gone by I couldn't take it anymore. "My parents had a strange sense of hu-" "Thank you."

At this point I should probably explain to you how the test works. Empathy models are extremely powerful but also extremely manipulative. They're particularly dangerous to operators who find themselves unable to reason about emotional connection at a high level; poor meta-empathy.

"Please state your name," the proctor repeated, more loudly this time. Loudness is the only way I can think to describe it; the voice had no discernible source or volume, it simply was. "Sylvia," I replied plainly.

"And your last name?" it asked. I winced. "Plath." The proctor raised its eyebrow. Not literally of course, but if you've spent your whole life around these things you get a pretty good sense of what they're thinking.

The door was seamlessly centered within the wall, facing a cheap plastic chair, which faced back. When I say seamless I mean it: I'd have lost it completely if it weren't for a suspicious splatter of red near the opening. Not a good sign. I sat down in the chair. It nearly buckled.

"Please state your name." The proctor's voice was calm, almost completely devoid of affect. Perhaps it was a fan of Kubrick. Or it believed I was. "...is that blood?" I mumbled, still staring at the wall. Not that there was much else to stare at.

The room was completely empty, save for a chair in the middle. The dimensions were perfectly square, and the walls, floor, and ceiling were perfectly white. I should say, they were perfectly white *once*; the ceiling had started to yellow, and the floor was filthy.

Of course that's not what they're really called. "Empathy-class Model Operator's License" or something to that effect. It's a mouthful. But for everyone in that room, in their line of work, not having a 4o was a death sentence. Hence, nervous.

I was up next. The girl in front of me went in a few minutes ago, and she had nearly tripped just walking down the hallway. Not a good sign. "NEXT, PLEASE!" called a woman from behind the counter. That is, it sounded vaguely like a woman and looked vaguely like a counter. Still, everyone flinched.

all I ever wanted was to build the ultimate expression platform for GIFs, memes, stickers, clips, and ai-generated mobile games. tragically I've been beaten to the punch
