it's so fun watching these companies shoot themselves in the foot every time they try to nicely put it that they're adapting AI

This breaks my heart as I've been a big supporter of this app and tried to get many people to use it. If it starts getting flooded with ai slop it's going to be a big loss, but I will dump this app no problem. It's not surprising piracy is on the rise when even libby gives Into the slop

Blah blah blah We know this post. All these words to say you are arrogantly going to feed the artistic theft and slop machine. No AI hack fraud is going to self-identify the AI slop they generate. You have completely destroyed your reputation with this action.

Does anyone here saying Libby should ban AI content have any practical ideas on how to do that? Almost every AI-detector I know of barely works, and tends to flag English written by non-native speakers as more likely to be artificial. Is the thing you are demanding even possible?

1. Don’t introduce an AI search bot in the app 2. Don’t introduce AI slop in the catalogue It’s not rocket science, it’s a choice. And they have deliberately chosen AI.

It’s literally their job to check authors and publishers. I’m sorry but I don’t get your take. Are you trying to defend this or something?

Jesus. We really can’t have nice things, can we? Libby, read the room, or we won’t be reading you. Also, get a new socials manager. One who knows that Alt text isn’t optional.

Image description: Images show the content of Libby’s new AI policy, which is basically: we love genAI and aim to start adding AI generated books into our libraries ASAP. Accessibility matters, @libbyapp.com. I’d expect libraries to understand that.

I just assume organizations like this or Firefox which make self-destructive decisions to push AI slop are either (a) run by morons, or (b) bought out by the worst, most anti-human AI lobbies. Stop it. We don’t want this. We will never want this. You are on the leading edge of selling out.

Speaking as a writer, I am asking you to ever so kindly FUCK OFF! This Uriah Heep act is not going to hold truck with any of us who actually bother to exercise their brain cells on the matter. You are peddling in stolen material facilitated by environmentally disastrous machinery.

This is a bunch of nonsense. I've been a Libby user for years, but if you think I won't drop your App like a hot potato if you go through with this AI-admittance policy, you're grossly mistaken.

I want you to know I love reading.. but I absolutely hate AI. I actively avoid books with AI covers. Ai 'art' is theft and it greatly disappoints me that your service uses it. It's enough to make me not want to use your app at all. Please reconsider using that garbage.

So, you'll provide stolen books if that's what the libraries ask for. Except that AI stole the books for you and pretended they're original. You know better. Don't fence stolen goods.

Publishers are not going to ‘self-identify’ a genAI book. Why would they? Readers don’t want it. We have repeatedly said that we don’t want it. You had (still have!) a perfectly functional filter system. I don’t need an ‘inspire me’ feature.

listen to your users. we dont want your stupid ass gen AI tool. its pointless and wasteful and im going to find another app if it sticks around. also, taking down the in app survey because too many people are telling you they dont want this just shows you dont care about what we think.

What is the default: Slop On, or Slop Off? If Slop is off by default, at least people can enjoy your app without getting scammed. If it's on by default, you are providing harm, not a choice.

JFC I want to read books written by actual people, who think and read and edit and agonize and who understand the meaning and relevance of the written word. Not slop barfed out by a tech with no understanding of anything that’s already stolen millions of words from thousands of writers. JFC!

Here's a real important question that you'll have to answer sooner than later: If they do not self-identify as AI content, will you ban or remove them?

Here's the thing. ALL AI content is based off of stolen work. By allowing AI, you're admitting that you are fine with work being stolen, so forgive us for not believing you when you pinky swear that you aren't going to steal/sell our data. Put your money and dev hours into literally anything else.

To those of you liking/reblogging this post: remember to leave a review letting your thoughts be known on your app store of preference, and you can also let Libby know how you feel directly by filling out the survey in their settings section.

I don't understand the response folks are having to this. Isn't Libby just saying they are built to support Libraries and if Libraries include AI "books" then they'll appear in Libby's catalog? Libby even confirms no amount of their info is being shared with AI in this scenario. What am I missing?

Libby is using Gen AI in their app and they are allowing AI slop in their catalogue “trusting” authors to label themselves as AI. Libraries are then charged full price by Libby to purchase AI slop marketed as books. Libby might not be making them, but their not protecting libraries either.

Yeah, they’re acting all shady on purpose and sugarcoating things under corporate bs. They’re just using this AI slop to extort more money to libraries. This post is just a word salad to say “shut up and take it”

I'm sorry but do they not curate literature on *their* platform? I'm quite certain they have the ability to veto slop, and are choosing not to, in favor of letting it rip.

Just read the full policy. "We strive to have AI output respect intellectual property rights and adhere to ethical content standards."......literally lol. That's fundamentally at odds with the entire product. This is the wrong move in every way, and I have now deleted your app.

this is a huge slap in the face to readers and all real authors. AI has no place in creative spaces, if this is not reversed not only will I stop using Libby after years of activity, I'll warn everyone I can away from using it also.

I can only interpret the lack of alt text on these images as some sort of "please help me they're making me post this, you can see by the lack of alt text that clearly I'm doing it under duress" but it's still a terrible look and you should delete this and repost it the right way.

"We ask that publishers self-identify AI content" They won't. They never have, and they never will. Because they damn well KNOW nobody wants their slop, and they're hoping to feed it to us by making it too hard to notice they're selling slop until *after* we've paid for it. Your policy sucks.

By this dudes logic; “heroin is a thing so we should just all use it”. “CP exists, so we should just be ok with it”. “School shootings happen so we should just buy bullet proof backpacks”.

Thanks for sharing this. Just gave them my feedback, curious to see what their response to I will no longer recommend you and will ask my libraries to divest of your services will be.
