the whole thing is. absurd but doesanyone wanna talk about the bit about toriel at the end there. the "scripted crit" that literally is only ever your own fault like you have to get that With Intention To Do something Fucked Up. im just thinking about that

Hell yes!!! Buying ASAP. Can’t wait to be emotionally abused by… a banana peel. Honestly though, it makes me wonder if they watched the trailer. This would be like someone upset they can’t beat Minit without experiencing character death.

..."Oh no, the video game wants me to experience feelings that may be relatable to how the protagonist is feeling!" And also the whole thing about dying feels like he's one of the guys who brags about going through games deathless. This is a video game, losing is part of learning how to win.

I can’t understand. I can’t understand. I just can’t understand. Also the random undertale mention when Toriel’s death is… completely avoidable. In that case you just suck. I guess this review will be another stain on their profile considering there isn’t even an achievement for doing that

Nah, I think the interactivity is completely integral to it; they're furious with THEMSELVES for every death that could have been skillfully avoided, and that's what pushes them to play games and improve. So if a design FORCED them to die, that feeling gets directed at the designer instead?

Good point. Such an experience magnified with the effectiveness of the game's character writing. Their history incrementally revealed over the course of the game, their dreams, anxieties, and then - one mistimed attack or misplaced on the map, and they're gone, and you sent them to their demise.

I should really bump In Stars And Time way up the terrifying backlog; I'd need to experience it firsthand to form a tighter player hypothesis. The bit about achievements-as-undesirable-brands especially is bizarre. The opposite of old Gamerscore chasers?

They're playing Pac-Man at the arcade. They hit a ghost and die. The game over sound plays through the speaker for all to hear. "Wow, after it already took my money, wow." They turn around and start shouting at everyone else in the arcade. "I died in this game, this is emotional abuse!"

the amount of time!! they took to word and write this!! and yet no fully developed understanding of "failure/dying in games" ≠ "a representation of your skill"

there is a certain type of extremely sheltered individual who believes they should never feel anything negative ever and works as hard as they can to inflict the buddha's upbringing on themselves

tbh! I think the most interesting thing I realized from their replies is they hated when Undertale went "heehoo you killed Toriel by accident and tried to erase it", and for some reason.... assumed ISaT was going to do the same thing? Like, thought the game was going to

ISAT is one of my favorite games, i loved the ending, but i didn’t really like act 3, it was too long imo but maybe that was intentional or i wasn’t looping frwd/bkwd enough. Even still, I put ISAT in the same tier as deltarune and outer wilds. Great games all around 🥰🥰🥰

The thing is, the speedrunning community already has a solution for this exact problem. If a death is truly unavoidable without hacks/glitches... as long as that's the only one, you still count as "deathless".

Not every game is for everyone but they're making themselves seem like a victim of a horrible crime😂 it really isn't that serious dude, move on to another game and stop being mad that not every game is to your standard or taste ✨️

i genuinely don't get the thought processm i mean, even ignoring the "this dev is manipulative because they made me feel emotions" card, did they think of the forced death as a punishment? this is a game about a time loop. death is a game mechanic and this is the tutorial.

Immediate flashbacks to a similarly lengthy meltdown I saw way back on the Penny Arcade forums (I think?) about someone who quit playing Braid about two minutes in because the game forces you to die in order to explain the time-rewinding mechanic. They felt the game was laughing at them for failing

Fascinating little glimpses into extreme player archetypes and fringe reasons for play that beg to be studied. How much "better" could I get at playing if I took every single death as a personal, deeply humiliating, and ultimately avoidable event? Is this how no hit bullet hell sickos are born?!

I just checked and since they left the review at 3.5 hours played, they've played another 3 hours. They must be enjoying it I guess or just absolutely seething the entire time, we may never know.

Honestly how dare you include a moment where it goes badly for the main character which if avoided would change the story quite a bit. That's very evil and twisted. I can't believe you'd betray the player making them be in a timeloop in the timeloop game smh

So if I understood this correctly: they are mad that you are forced to die... in a game where dying is a game mechanic? That they think dying in a game is a proof of failure? And that forcing a player to "fail" is abusive? NGL I'm kinda curious what kind of an environment they were raised in now!🤔

Yeah this is just a really really annoying 'review' I kind of get the sentiment. Like in a game about personal failures, having a fail state you can't possibly avoid due to no fault of the player can be seen as a tad counterintuitive to the core messages, as it isn't actually your failure.

BUT... yeah no this review is insane even if I can personally see how it'd be a little off putting this is just like reddit tier complaining. "Achievement stain"?? And yeah no this isn't like manipulative or abusive or anything like I genuinely don't know what the reviewer is on about.

This person will never feel the joy of going “huh…I wonder-“ and cackling at the result of choosing the pineapple snack 🤣 But seriously, how are they so surprised that this happens in a game notoriously based on time loops?? 😭

I don't want to join the crowd dumping on this guy - seems to me like he's very likely neurodivergent and/or facing some mental health issues. An achievement that says you died (which can't be avoided!) is "uneraseable proof of failure"? That's not something a stable, healthy person believes.

.... how did it take them 3.5 hours to get to the scripted death? "urghhh they made this WAY past the refund window on PURPOSE" buddy? what? hello? what were you doing, examining each blade of grass on the way?

This has to be a parody right? In what world would somebody who says meta-examination of save game mechanics not understand how a time loop game works? Also, Undertale doesnt even have achievements??? There isn’t a stain there??? Finally, Motherlovin’. Incredible.

Imagine having such a small ego that you cannot handle a game that uses death as a central plot point and get triggered by it thinking you failed. I would love to see how people like this behave in real life.

The fact he calls you, out of any descriptors he could have called, a "script kiddie" is such a proof of major "Not The Target Audience"itis. Oh, and him complaining about the Toriel crit hurting his feelings, too. You know, the one you get on a Genocide run if you attack her ?

i read the review and it's a (relatively) normal review just being angry about frustrating stuff but then at the end they say how this review will never be revised and fuck miyazaki and then they play for more 20 times longer like than at the point where they made the review - like ??? what ???

this is so beautiful i cant believe your art deeply affected this person and made them experience a negative emotion but most importantly of all compelled them to call you a ‘script kiddie’
