The real answer is that university administrators don't have to be bribed because they are already part of the same financial machine that silicon valley billionaires own and operate. Universities haven't been focused on education since the 70's

The entire utilitarianism vs deontology argument of whether the ends justify the means is a phantom. The ends *determine* the means. If you desire an end, you rarely have the luxury of much choice in how to accomplish it.

But the notion that you can separate an end from the means to achieve it is clearly artificial nonsense, not even worth spending time on. That comes from liberal transactional thinking that has no application outside of the extremely specific realm of economic value

So the answer is: the end and the means are one thing, separable only in the abstract, and therefore both are either justified or not justified by the same conditions, which must be external to both.

If you desire an end and the means are too costly, you simply don't desire that end enough. If you desire an end and the means are objectionable or intolerable, you most likely don't understand the end you desire, or don't understand your desire itself.

Western anticommunism is rooted in racism, full stop. White people cannot mentally withstand the idea that non whites succeeded in building functioning socialist societies where they failed, and so they have to invent a reality where they didn't, in the face of all evidence

Seeing art of modern tiefling characters is wild because back in AD&D you had to pay real close attention to distinguish them from their mortal race; like, their "demonic trait" would be "red irises" or "a faint brimstone smell" or "subcutaneous horn nubs on the forehead"

Actually, now that I've verbalized it I feel like this should probably be talked about more? The game industry's problems with capital and the culture of layoffs are related, but not the same thing, and interpreting the latter as a mere symptom of the former is naive

FakeKraid@fakekraid.bsky.social

Also, the layoffs aren't really because the game industry is less profitable than it used to be, but because layoffs have become an established strategy for cost reduction in general. Even if the industry entered a boom period starting tomorrow, the layoffs would continue as a regular occurrence

Like, it sucks, but people have been predicting for about twenty years that coding would eventually become a "low value" skill thanks to the proliferation of education resources (which was, of course, the point of them), and we are now seeing it happen

Layoffs will always be a part of the corporate game industry from now on, because they save money and they've become established as the normal. Corporations have no reason to stop no matter how much profits recover

About the only thing I can see stopping it is a massive, industry-wide unionization drive and the establishment of essentially a game developers' guild, and unfortunately software people missed that train because they thought they were immune to normal workers' rights issues

lmfao get owned

Erin Fogg says Free Link@criminalerin.bsky.social

"[When the USS Benfold lost] the ability to maneuver on its own, the almost 10,000-ton warship saw its galley services, toilets, air conditioning and potable water impacted [for four days and also did you know like 98% of sailors on ships never even get to see the sun or breathe the salty sea air?]"

to be excruciatingly clear: I do not care about the plight of US soldiers, who are the enemies of humanity. You can have the most disadvantaged background and the biggest sob story in the world, but once you sign up to murder brown people overseas for money, you lose the right to complain, full stop

As far as I am concerned, once you sign up to be part of the US murder machine, you have no rights. You signed up to kill people for money, so you'd better be prepared for whatever happens to you. It's not like signing up for service in a non-imperialist country: US soldiers are hired killers

The artistic bankruptcy of fascism is the result of a very particular set of political and historical factors, it has nothing to do with some magical link between artistic talent and moral uprightness. There is no link between being a good person and being a good artist, and that's a dangerous idea

I think I just raised that a reason I've always kind of rankled against western style CRPGs that emphasize role playing is that I during games (or really anything else for that matter) with arbitrary rules and outcomes, and that's really the only way game-ified roleplay can be

"Yes but that's how games model the essentially arbitrary nature of human interaction" look, I know, and there's a reason why I limit my interaction with people I can't read to the point that I can mostly predict their reaction to whatever I might say or do - see the first post re: arbitrary stuff

Unfortunately the only way to model my real life response to people who react to me in ways that are both unpredictable and understandable in a game is to stop playing the game, which is what I do with most Western style CRPGs after they play "gotcha" with me enough times

"You chose to say this thing to this person, turns out they didn't like that and now you're going to be locked out of an outcome you might have wanted" oh, well, sorry I couldn't read the developers' mind?

Death is an ever-present threat in the US, and human life is cheap. We are all expendable and replaceable and our value to society is measured out to the fraction of a penny by the companies one of whose executive Luigi Mangione shot.

And if you want to start changing that, the correct path forward is not hand-wringing and nervous chatter, but disciplined political activism. Join a communist party or, frankly, stop complaining.

Death will not care for your moral outrage or helpless indignation when it comes for you. Either prepare to fight for your survival or die quietly; any other option lacks the dignity befitting a human.

Acting as if that one death is somehow shocking and repugnant in a society where preventable death is so commonplace as to elicit actual boredom is beyond childish. You don't have to be some kind of bloodthirsty monster not to care about Luigi's victim (I can't even be bothered to remember his name)

One more corpse for the tower of corpses that already scrapes the sky. Who cares? You or I may be thrown on the pile tomorrow and the death machine will still keep rolling along. I am sorry to be harsh, but: grow up and start facing reality. You do not live in a society where death matters.

I don't have a hot take on [recent topic], but I do have one about something else: if you post a hot take and turn off comments and quote posts you should probably have considered just not posting it on social media. That's not what social media is for or how it works. I unfollow for that behavior.

(And that goes even if I don't have anything in particular I feel like replying to that post, it's the principle of the thing. It's a social media site, not your personal blog. Don't be a coward, ride the elevator if you're gonna rip one in it.)

He didn't kill someone random, but the person he killed had in fact killed thousands of random people, no less because he didn't personally pull the trigger. We are conditioned only to care about exceptional violence, and ignore the far greater amount of commonplace violence that surrounds us

Mind you, I'm not in support of this kind of adventurism; but that's from a utilitarian standpoint, not a moral one. We have one dead executive and one potential activitist going to prison, probably for life, and the trade-off is simply not worth it.

We need ALL of the insurance executives punished, not just a few, and that is going to require a disciplined mass movement, which cannot be built by propaganda of the deed

"Sorry gamer! We need you to save those swimmers for a valid receptacle to keep the population up!"

People used to be able to jack off to modded skyrim but they added Easy Anti-Crank in an update and now chains will explode out of the screen to restrain your hog if you try.

Hmmm, make it a blanket pass at everything post-KOTOR for Bioware, the writing annoys me in most of them

No hate, no dogpiling, just curious. For me, it's Skyrim. Don't know why, considering it should be exactly my kind of game, but it just didn't click for me.

Hey guys! Due to the trend of "what's your undertale soul color" reels I've seen recently, I decided to make something hopefully more accurate and fun than the other tests out there. I wanted it to be very Undertale themed and to have a bunch of Easter eggs. Try it at undertale.jadenthejaded.uk!

I don't even know what "indies will save us" is supposed to mean; save us from the video game market crash? Lol, not likely, they'll just still be there *after* the crash, because they were never predicated on a corporate industry and market in the first place

Casey S. Pumpkins 🎃@caseyexplosion.bsky.social

"Indies will save us" No! YOU WILL SAVE INDIES! Go leave a review for that neat indie game you like, share the trailer for an upcoming game you're anticipating, tell your fave developer they did a good job, go tell people about such and such game that's just come out, you can make a difference!

What they ARE predicated on is a lively and interested community of players and developers (whether careerist, hobbyist, or in-between), so do what this one says and go participate! Purchase, play, and review and you'll help make everything more fun for everyone
