it’s said all the time but I think we should continue to hammer home how insane it is that we got dead-eyed bros trying to sell us robots that will free us from the supposedly cruel burden of “creative careers” instead of the actual cruel burden of “doing menial household chores”

Yes, I’m aware building robots that can do your chores is insanely hard, as compared to making a genAI tool that can make pictures of five-boobed-ladies - which is why all those techbros who constantly masturbate to their own genius should stop fucking around and do something actually impressive

Dear techbros frantically nutting at each other over your own god-like brilliance for making the Five-Boobed-Lady-Picture-Machine: I would at this point settle for you applying your alleged technical genius to making a printer that works

I would like a dishwasher that doesn't need to be connected to the internet to work. Hello, Bosch Benchmark supposedly high end dishwasher bros? I just bought this thing, and now I want to get rid of it. It has some functions that work with buttons. But not all. Cancel cycle w/ a button please?

I would settle for a better spelling and grammar check - like the one my standard issue one I had before the AI one magically appeared on my devices and is so bad I can’t write on a device without getting mad

My working theory is that the reason it’s all “AI! Crypto! Simgularity!” Is because everything about actually being a body in a world of matter is tacit (ie material properties), taken care of by infrastructure (water, sewage, HVAC…), gendered (food, clothes…), or someone else’s problem (pollution).

Yes, that would be *why* we have all these systems (technological and also social) that make them somebody else’s problem. But not engaging with them (or thinking that we just need better code) is still the equivalent of little kids thinking that meat comes from the grocery store on plastic trays.

I saw a very impressive presentation a while back in which an industrial robot picked up a cloth and put it in a bin, usually without perforating cloth, bin or scenery! I'm not even kidding about the "impressive".

It's also why they keep insisting the tech is good at doing the things it's terrible at and don't think at all about the things it does that it is actually good at, since all of that is kinda boring and of minimal use to people who don't already possess a robust creative skillset.

It just makes me so mad. There are so many cool possibilities, and instead we have this shit. Like, there are cool possibilities that you can ask current AI to do, but they foolishly did not design it for THOSE so it's a crapshoot whether it will work and thus it cannot be trusted.

Even in terms of AI that still does data work vs physical labor. We could EASILY have an AI with a primary purpose of processing and organizing a lot of information very quickly. It would still need a LLM of sorts to properly parse an explanation of the task, and to format the answer well.

My take on AI is ... if it were a) reliable and b) not a massive energy commitment that is ruining the environment and communities around data centers ... AI should only be used for things that you do not fucking care about enough to learn to do them/want to retain the skill yourself.
