Also from yesterday's post: Accelerating sea level rise and wobble in the moon's orbit will sharply increase high tide flooding in Miami over the next 15 years; the record king tides of the past week will seem ordinary by the late-2030s. Worst flooding during the king tides of Sep-Nov.

The University of Alabama at Birmingham is forcing its radio station to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” to comply with a farcical state law with no enforcement mechanism. They took a toothless law, gave it teeth, and took a bite out of press freedom. @trevortimm.bsky.social explains:

there are a million things worse in the report, but a random billionaire hornball starting a beauty pageant for 14-to-19-year-olds is a red flag you can see from space, and I feel like society should have been better about saying "Hey hold on there just one minute buddy"

Absolutely incredible: Tuesday morning's high tide in #Miami exceeded the major flood threshold... that is the 1st time it has ever happened in the city's history without a hurricane storm surge. It tied (within 0.1 inches) the storm tides produced by Irene on Oct 15, 1999 and Wilma on Oct 24, 2005.

You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.

Steven T. Dennis@steventdennis.bsky.social

For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

In my observation, the events where women and men are in the same place (Olympics, tennis majors) have the best outcomes in attention, prize money, TV ratings, etc. Today, the NCAA again punted on putting the men's and women's Final Fours in the same city. www.ncaa.org/news/march-b...

When they tell us "there is no alternative," what they mean is "stop trying to think of alternatives." To imagine radically is to move beyond the helplessness of prediction: a radical imagination dares to insist that history is what we make, not what happens to us.
