Hi! I'm Victor! Here's a quick intro :D These days I focus on ML/AI at Google but have been a teacher, data scientist MLE, etc. I try to be genuine & positive so when I leave this world it's in a better state than I found it You can likely find my other online presences on GitHub.com/MrGeislinger

100% guilty of this & I'll finally bite the bullet. w/o fail, they respond with feeling the same guilt Literally today messaged a friend we had another baby— they told me they're due in Jan! We're meeting up tomorrow to catch up ♥️ Take this as your sign to message that friend now

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

Today I replied to an e-mail from a friend I really like, who is awesome and cool and whose e-mails I love to receive. I had been wanting to respond for a while but somehow just… did not. The e-mail I replied to was sent in January, 2024. Why am I like this.

Also did months-long/year-long email tag with another friend where the emails were super long to make up for the gap. Then we tried texting which was also too long We then realized we should just video call. So now we chat more than any other long distance friend video calling every 1-2 months ♥️

Trying to find books on René Descartes & Isaac Newton to read to my 6 year olds' class & then donate but I'm surprised how many are just AI-generated books I found a good one on Descartes but having trouble finding one for Newton. Would love any recommendations!

all new things are just old things...

Going to write a “I don’t want your garbage markup language” though it is less prevalent than bespoke query languages. Still come back to this banger all the time erikbern.com/2018/08/30/i...

I don't understand how it's legal to sell a washing machine with a built-in digital timer but doesn't actually correspond to minutes Stupid machine has been on '5' for the past 6 minutes in its spin cycle & I got places to be (see? even 'dumb' tech can hallucinate)

One of the strangest things about having a newborn again is how quickly the patterns & procedures come back to me I feel like a sleeper agent that's been activated back into 'baby care mode'

A recent example is a 'baby logger' for tracking feedings & diapers Focused on the data structure (so I can play w/ data) & the AI wrapped it w/ a UI my wife can use too Compared to when I had my twins, I never spent time to build my logger intuitive enough for it to used consistently

basically me looking at these charts youtu.be/k7q0Y2W0Rn4

Wife's hooked up to monitor contractions wife to me: oh good, you have data occupy you me: 100%— oh look at that, this one's lasting a lot longer! her: oh yeah it's basically the same thing 🙄 (but seriously we both laughed because I couldn't help myself peeking at the data last time) #dataBS

Still wild to me I can have AI help me put together a full app so quickly Put together this little web app in under an hour today. Basically helped recreate what I made a while ago to include linked text, quoted posts & such. But man makes little frontends which was almost my biggest hang-up

Recently read Dark Archives with a friend after their suggestion Interesting history on human-skin bound books— surprised how mostly made around 1800s but also makes sense. Again, history points to a privilege class that had difficulty humanizing others side note: first ebook I read for some time

I think How to Keep House While Drowning is a nice little booklet to help with some down-to-basics strats on just trying to get through life I think it reads well as a quick guide over a cover-to-cover read. Even if you're not 'struggling', I'm pretty sure anyone can get something from this book

My wife suggested I read Birth Vibes since our 3rd little one was on their way Not her first pregnancy but still a helpful book (especially since we never did a non-pandemic birth). It was chill & vibes were reassuring— author is super fun & puts you in a good headspace :D

Scream with Me was another read w/ a friend Interesting book but don't know if I completely agree with idea that the horror movies were necessarily inspired the movie, the set of movies discussed do seem to have at least hit the public consciousness during the same time as related social issues

Was on my to-read list longer than it should've been but had finally gotten to Careless People And I don't think I have anything new to say that wasn't already said before— just wow & also, unfortunately nothing in there I don't find surprising

Finally got to reading Cultish and this is another book where I was sort hoping for more linguistics haha But it was a very interesting book & confirmed what I had feelings about Crossfit from the 20-teens (reminded me of this old video: https://youtu.be/pqb9pBJweVU)

Technically, I was rereading The Martian but this time I did it with a friend for our mini 'book club'. This was after watching the movie (read it back in May) & I feel that the book, the audiobook, & the movie are all great in their own special ways :D

Catching up on my reading log…. Back in April, read Shady Characters which was a fun little vacation read about punctuation. I think the ☞ manicule might be my new favorite

Also finished True Color by @korystamper.bsky.social yesterday It was a quick break from my 'Silicon Valley' & 'AI industry' reads. Was actually hoping more linguistics but pleasantly surprised that it focuses on defining colors in dictionaries. This would be a fun read after Dictionary Wars!

Was thinking about my trusty ol' ML workhorse w/ 128gb RAM & dual 3090 TIs has mostly stayed off for the past few months Been wondering what to do with it, but a friend brought up selling the GPUs (& RAM) could be worth it : ( But winter's coming— could always just run it as a heater lol

My kids have now learned how to use the index to find countries in their kid's atlas. They were showing me how to find 'Ireland' so they could tell me about leprechauns Haven't been prouder of my little nerds

Just got a call from a friend who took today off to run errands and one of her errands is calling friends she hasn't seen in a long time and saying she misses them and loves them.

Wild to me that I totally agree Been volunteering in building tools for my kids' school & activities. I can put out good & solid software in a few days that would've taken me multiple weeks if not months & it's only getting easier/faster Crazy part: I'm just using antigravity w/ Gemini Flash

cyber professional@permadeath.com

3 years later, I now do believe we're at a point where it's possible to release a "years of effort" software project in weeks to months, and that people are actually doing that & it's not really coming from the LinkedIn posters, who seem to be constantly flapping between models for trivial issues

I know this is probably true, but I'm honestly surprised it's not significantly more since GPT-2 dropped Might be more a reflection of the majority of text I read: books, surprisingly little internet from select ppl/sources. But its effect is spreading; so many emails w/AI from ppl I actually know

Ryan Moulton@moultano.bsky.social

Despite being a moderate AI user both at home and at work, I still suspect it has overall made my life on net worse, by having to constantly be on guard for spam in everything I read.

Our family is replacing the fridge & I underestimated how attached my kids are to the old one tears in their eyes: we've known it our whole lives! They've asked me to take multiple photos & videos of them with the fridge

Food nerdery: I recently set up a home dry aging fridge and just finished my first 45 day dry age! It’s been a fun little project to set up a raspberry pi to monitor it and keep on top of temperature and humidity.

One was (X-t X)-inv X-t Y in an econometrics class. Can't say I reach for that one a lot But the other was "The mean of an indicator is a probability" in a proof-heavy ML theory class which curiously has proven a lovely little "obvious once you heard it" coding hack (versus sum(num)/sum(denom))

Realized in this moment that with a backwards hat & eating chips over a green-glowing keyboard working on dual monitors, half of which is covered by a terminal, I am a stereotype bro-grammer

Seeing this van gave me such a smile only to be saddened by the realization that a non-insignificant number of people won't get the logo Stay in school kids & take calculus to have a wider appreciation of the world's wonders (specifically math jokes & puns)

Oh I like this idea— something that doesn't give an explicit 'probability' of being AI-written (what's an individual's threshold with an arbitrary probability?), but points to the smells It's not going to be perfect but puts power in the human to decide (not just another algorithm to blindly trust)

Before interviewing for an analytics-nested “Data Scientist” role, ask whether the first 90-day deliverable is a model, an experiment, or a recurring report. Those are three different jobs hiding under one title.

My twins have been working on making their 'Night of Terror' movie since yesterday They have their notebook to write their plan: - only for older kids (8&up) since it'll be scary - the villain's name: Escoma - it'll be a musical Wild hearing kid creativity building the plot together

Been testing this 'sign-language-to-text' (SL2T) for almost a year & it's so awesome to see this out! Looked at this almost a decade ago & knew we'd get the tech & ML models there eventually (but super challenging). Talking w/ some Deaf folks, an equivalent of 'voice-to-text' was huge for them
