Lula and Zelensky are the two single most important leaders in the world today. We have a lot to learn from both

There's a lot of people who never made charts with data making Claude charts with data and I'm going to go against the tide and say I like it. I really don't care if it's messy. Lots of my programmer friends are trying to unlock analyzing data and never really have before. I think it's cool

Nathan Fielder is one of 3 people that I'll watch anything he does with no other information

Manisha Krishnan@manishakrishnan.bsky.social

Is Nathan Fielder a genius auteur or a sociopath? @milesklee.bsky.social breaks down his extremely unconventional style and why he might be the perfect person to take on a fraudster like Elizabeth Holmes. www.wired.com/story/the-ne...

You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

The claim of "AI can't be trusted for important questions" is actually a strong argument in favor of public access for more information. Why can't I point my agent at the full text of the law? Sure it might be wrong, but so might my lawyer -- that's what the courts are for. Set more knowledge free.

Some of this is already true, some of it's true depending on where you are, or who you're dealing with.

I'm generally in support of this anyway, but I do think that the ability to directly convert money and compute into reasonable cognitive efficacy changes the value math on why it's societally good to make more information public

What if your landlord was required to publish the lease terms of everyone in your building? Their maintenance costs in the accounting of where that money was spent on work and materials? Your city government how money is spent maintaining roads

one of the key factors in the souring of Silicon Valley culture is the whole "acceptance of failure" element... it's one thing to not let the failure of some enterprise SaaS startup hold you back, but when your startup causes children to self-harm at scale maybe that failure should stick with you

wild that you can see the dotcom bubble burst here

New blog post, folks. "Time Till Open Source Alternative is now zero." staltz.com/time-till-op...

the problem with accountability is that you're not stopping people from actually doing the harm, so if thats the only outcome of bad behavior then actually there is no accountability. you have to ALSO prevent the NEXT person from doing the same harm, now that it's been known to be harmful

at a macro level, folks behave in ways they've observed to be normalized, so if "accountability" comes years later after an extensive process, guess what a dozen people have already internalized that as "normal behavior." there's no accountability without installing a new normal

It just takes so much energy to keep a space running effectively, and the person doing so is subjected to incentives that make it very difficult to remain "a part of the community" while occupying that role. Groupchats are just more durable than open networks

unfortunately i've come to believe fairly strongly that online community is deeply insufficient for the human experience, which makes it hard to stay attuned to the online communities i care about

none of the friends I most seek to emulate are deeply involved in online spaces, they skim across many cuz that's where the people are — not because the space itself is good to hang out in

I've been considering lately the intersection of BPD, cPSTD, ADHD, and the modern colloquial understanding of Autism (especially as I relate to those labels) and I just see shades of these symptoms absolutely everywhere online. anxious/disorganzed attachment, everywhere. seems bad

unfortunately i've come to believe fairly strongly that online community is deeply insufficient for the human experience, which makes it hard to stay attuned to the online communities i care about

very deep down, I've come to believe that the attraction to online community is a symptom of an unhealed social/emotional wound

The "you're almost out of storage" nag on google services is insane. Constant nudging every time I use Drive or Gmail or Photos for the past YEAR, without making any effort to intentionally conserve space. Gee guess it can't be as urgent as you're suggesting can it??

"couldn't focus long enough to follow through" it me

Jason Lengstorf@jason.energy

most of the startups I’ve seen struggle/fail did so because they tried to build every fun idea they had, ignored feedback from their customers because the things they wanted were hard/boring to implement, never marketed because they couldn’t focus long enough to follow through

Carl Vitullo reposted

the hard parts of building a business are - solving a real problem for real people - ignoring shiny ideas that are fun but distracting - prioritizing boring stuff that moves the needle - connecting with customers if anything, AI makes it *harder* to build a successful business

Honestly, I think a lot of this comes out of spaces and situations where intentionally reading 'the enemy' - be that a high school rival, a political outsider, another academic, whatever - in bad faith is rewarded as a display of group solidarity, a demonstration of belonging through hate.

I just don't think most people are capable of talking through their problems well enough to get the AI to solve it, because most people can't talk through their problems well enough for human programmers to implement solutions to them. Do you think AI will cross that chasm somehow?

I think there's a positive correlation between ability to write a good job description and ability to successfully execute AI usage at a company

a weird and dissonant part of the whole social emotional healing journey for me has realizing that i _am_ pretty cool and rare, actually. i spent a long time trying to decide if i actually unusual (complimentary) as it seemed i was or if that was the "delusions of grandeur" on the symptom list

the "primarily obsessional OCD" suggestion from an early therapist may have been more accurate than i gave credit, since i'm now seeing folks talk about struggles like that in the context of "moral ocd"

moving in with a partner and a metamor, with friends in a second unit. gonna be great, once the water damage and electrical is working

jokes on you i am also addicted to arguing (but in a less likeable way)

ceej@ceej.online

when someone who’s addicted to arguing on here is making an argument you agree with you may be tempted to enter the fray in support, but this is a folly. they want to argue more than they want to hold actual beliefs. you will be a casualty of friendly fire

Extremely anecdotal, not actual work, but I had four independent Sonnet agents playing an MMO with access to self-modify the SDK that hit the game's API. They used in-game chat to discuss bugs they noticed and notify each other of commits they pushed, and a bunch of them were real fixes

I kept trying to convince them that DM7 was a real ally who had helped them tremendously, it wasn't enough to convince them but I guess Jim had his doubts

An ally of theirs went offline long enough to get fully purged out of their memories, at which point they panicked about the "spy" in their midst
