I know I'm a wet blanket. But shit, man, don't tell me that your zoo expansion project is going to advance conservation when the most extreme threat to these animals' long term survival is our thoughtless use and expansion of petroleum and natural gas

I got this response from Legislator Lystra McCoy when I asked on her FB page if the new zoo project was going to be all-electric and incorporate renewable energy:

A hybrid air source heat pump typically switches to gas heat around 0 degrees C. Obviously I don't know exactly the tech or design here, but my guess is that during Rochester's traditional heaating season, 85-90% of the complex will have most of its heat supplied by gas.

How are they heating and cooling this building? Will there be any green energy components?

In fact I will say the Earnest and Pious Charismatic Ethnic Minority political figure (AOC, Mamdani, El-Sayed) has been a pretty good bet for the American left so far, whereas the Disaffected Gruff White Guy Showcasing True Masculinity (Fetterman, Platner) has been a worse bet. Just an observation.

Yeah start insinuating he has morning chai rather than coffee, say that he knocks things for 6 rather than hits a home run, allege that he is generally a clean living good boy who loves his mother and prays every Friday (pejorative).

This is so fucking racist. What an embarrassment to this country

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. I would like to see the end of the term "vaccine skeptic," to be replaced by "reality denier." These so-called skeptics are actually the most gullible rubes on the planet when it comes to conspiracy nonsense and tech-bro slop; the only thing that makes them skeptical is peer-reviewed evidence.

Guess what? Gas boilers were once a "middle class technology". So were televisions, and phones. That's the standard trajectory for any roll-out. Build the market, drive down the costs and an exclusive tech is universalised. Or did you have another route in mind?

The big tell to me on the narrow claim the bill is so good for clean energy that it will reduce oil & gas is that the oil and gas companies are among its strongest supporters. I don’t think “our side” outfoxed them.

When this portable, window-mount, heat pump came out it was $4,000-$5,000 to purchase and install. Now it is down to ~$3,000. It's a cold-climate heat pump that operates to -22°F, runs on 120V and you can still see out the window! 🧪💡🔌☀️💨💧🔋

Same thing goes for the AI utopia/accelerationist/singularity story, which is basically the same as the AI doom story. There are plenty of problems that don't yield to increased intelligence. A lack of intelligence is not why we have a climate crisis or no durable peace in the Middle East.

We are 24 years away from when the world needs to be at net zero carbon emissions. Fossil fuel infrastructure and even some appliances have about a 25-year design life. That means that every gas power plant, gas pipeline, or gas boiler you install today is a middle finger pointed at your grandkids.
