How could any psychiatrist equate "not diagnosable on brain scan" with "doesn't exist"? Or find any meaning at all in "lied my way to a false diagnosis and then took meds not meant for me and felt terrible"? The problem is in the complete disingenuity. (haven't watched, just read the article)

This #OpenAccess study from 'Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology' investigates the cross-sectional associations of digital technology use with mental health indicators during the pandemic in 12 countries in the Global South. bit.ly/4q1eLTV 🧠🩺 #MentalHealth

bit.lyChildren’s social connections, internet usage and mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Global South: evidence from Disrupting Harm - Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric EpidemiologyPurpose There is a notable lack of studies investigating the mental health associations of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Global South, particularly with regard to the use of digital technologies. We aimed to investigate the cross-sectional associations of digital technology use with mental health indicators during the pandemic in 12 countries in the Global South. Methods We used data from the UNICEF Innocenti Disrupting Harm survey. The survey included a representative sample of 11,912 internet-using children aged 12–17 in Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. We modelled the associations of social connection during lockdown and internet use during the pandemic with six different indicators of wellbeing in each country (excluding Tanzania, where there had been no lockdowns) and in the overall sample using robust linear and logistic regression. We controlled for a range of putative socioeconomic and demographic confounders and handled missing data using multiple imputation. Results We did not find clear evidence for any general associations of social connection or internet use with mental health indicators during lockdown across countries. Rather, our results are complex and demonstrate that the relationship depends heavily on an individual’s context; not just on the country they are living in but also on their gender, urbanicity and other factors. Nonetheless, our results highlight key focus areas for further research. Conclusion Extensive further research is needed to identify ways in which technology use, including internet use, might act as a risk or protective factor relevant to mental ill health among young people in the countries of the Global South.

Our study uses data from the @unicefinnocenti.bsky.social Disrupting Harm project, which recruited representative samples of internet-using children in each country. The findings demonstrate that there are no straightforward answers to questions of digital mental health in these countries.

Honoured to share our new paper in @nature.com today. Across 12 countries in eastern and southern Africa and Southeast Asia, 1 in 6 internet-using children had experienced technology-facilitated child sexual exploitation and abuse. A thread 🧵

Always good to have your response to a consultation immediately ready to go. Suggests you've definitely engaged with the results of the consultation and that the entire thing wasn't a waste of time.

Hi, me again. This sample was restricted to *only teens who had nighttime background phone data* which means everyone whose phones went unused between 10 and 6 were excluded. Also no serious discussion of teen sleep problems ignores early school start times as the core problem.

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

A new study shows how school-night phone use could be disrupting adolescents’ vital sleep. "Nearly half of adolescents are using their phones between midnight and 4 a.m.,” the study's lead author said. “That’s a really critical window when kids should be asleep, especially on school nights.”

📢 New @ucl.ac.uk research finds people who experience mental health difficulties in childhood at ages 5-16 are more likely to have irregular sleep patterns at ages 46-48, with more reported to sleep less than six hours every night. Read more on the CLS website 👉 buff.ly/4TdWrN0

We used the @clscohorts.bsky.social 1970 British Cohort Study to investigate how mental health in childhood is related to sleep duration at age 46. Thanks to the accelerometry data available in the study (for free!) we were able to use both self-reported and objective measures of sleep 😴

Happy to share my new study, publ. in Social Science Research 🎉 Bottom line: Yes, adolescents use their phones a lot 🤳 But I find no support for the notion that this use displaces reading, homework, hobbies, physical act., sleep... Instead: Changing media preferences 📺 ->📱. doi.org/10.1016/j.ss...

From the abstract: "[...] no evidence that early adolescents spend less time on enrichment, physical activity, or sleep after acquiring their first mobile phone. Instead, acquiring their first mobile phone is associated with a significant reduction in time spent watching TV, movies, or videos."
