Further and higher education are in crisis. The government can no longer afford to look away. This Budget must deliver fair pay, sustainable funding and a future for post-16 education. Education is a public good. It’s time to treat it like one.

“Can we really call our system fair when people who came here under one set of rules now face a retrospective change?” Abtisam Mohamed MP raises concerns in Parliament about the impact of proposed settlement rule changes on academics and other international workers.

There are no shortcuts to building a stronger union. As UCU vice president Mark Pendleton explains, real change takes sustained organising, both locally and across the UK. In episode 2 of No Shortcuts, we discuss how we build the collective strength needed to fight back and win.

Whether you're on strike, balloting or facing the threat of cuts, another UCU branch is facing similar challenges. Through Education. It's ours., we're connecting branches across the UK to share experiences, learn from each other and build solidarity. Get involved via the website.

“The word is carnage, it is carnage what they are doing now – at the local level and also at the national, senior management level in the UK. Why are they thinking about the destruction of higher education?” www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Universities in Northern Ireland face a £21 million funding cut, with both Queen’s Belfast and Ulster University already facing financial deficits. More cuts could mean fewer student places and courses. Higher education needs investment, not further cuts. Education. It’s ours.

Honestly, I’m sick of Universities investing in vanity projects, follies and half cooked schemes on the back of those who really make the university: the staff who teach, research and support students & the students who suffer when ratios go up, support goes down and lecturers are overworked.

Ulster University spent £800,000 on a project that was then abandoned. They are now proposing up to 450 staff redundancies. We have to expose the hypocrisy and incompetence of many of those leading the higher education sector in 2026. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Universities contribute £6.3 billion a year to the East Midlands economy. But at the University of Nottingham, hundreds of jobs and vital courses are under threat. “Students suffer as much from this restructuring as staff.” This fight is about protecting jobs and education for future generations.
