#BREAKING 🚨 Incumbent left-wing Brazilian president Lula has come from behind to be re-elected over Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro Lula trailed in the first round of voting earlier this month, but has now won by a margin of around 2%

Congratulations, Watergate, awesome, but what else is there? I am mainly seeing endless stenography of power purchased by a certain amount of, shall we say, knob polishing. Decades of coasting on fumes in ways Nixon would've approved of.

Imagine if they had food trucks selling these near polling places

Ava DuVernay's 14th, about the 14th Amendment, uses AI to animate old photos that are in the public domain, and the filmmaker wants people to see the documentary for themselves before deciding how they feel about it. tinyurl.com/c6nj6vf7

Can anybody recommend a good article about how Monument Valley came to symbolize "The American West" in the general sense? Yes, I know John Ford shot a lot of movies there, and other people did as well, mainly because Ford did. But I'm wondering if there's more to it?

just to get ahead of future advancements, i also don't want to watch robots shoot basketballs perfectly from 75 feet every time. the frailty of our human endeavors is the point.

i don't want art from a machine the same way i don't want a love note from my toaster or a passionate, fiery sermon from the air purifier

The question "why would I care about something that no human had anything to do with" hasn't been answered by the people pushing this technology

Cartoon Brew@cartoonbrew.bsky.social

China’s first AI-generated theatrical feature has flopped, earning just $181,000 in its first weekend. By contrast, the scrappy ‘Niu Lai’ turned its crude animation into a viral attraction, grossing nearly $10 million a couple of months ago. www.cartoonbrew.com/box-office-r...

Wild chain of events: An artist on FB asked who the subject of a painting was--she'd painted from a photo. A friend alerted me. I was able to tell Shannon Burch that her painting of a woman protesting at Broadview ICE... was me. Honored, to say the least. Abolish ICE www.instagram.com/p/De48EQUGYSF/

Takes like this or why I prefer the adjective "non-fiction" to "documentary" – there's less chance for people to go in half cocked and tell us what the movie doing wrong

STAT@statnews.com

“'You Can See Everything' is a hilarious, thrilling, fascinating, beautiful piece of art. What it certainly is not is a documentary, and it’s dangerous to pretend that it is,” writes Theranos whistleblower Tyler Shultz. https://bit.ly/4Bk2nDJ

Even if they're not all for me, this is good. And hopefully, we can be spared future rounds of terminally online people declaring the movies are dead. Also, these movies are all made by human hands, minds and hearts.

I always told my clients real talent will leap out & someone will see it and recognize it. I am sure Spielberg is especially attuned. He talks about Joan Crawford seeing his talent and championing him after he did the Night Gallery ep with her & others were dismissive and doubted him.

Best night I've had in years. And I'm glad the feeling is worldwide, at least for the democratically conscious. I cast this vote not for me, but for every generation after mine that will inherit this beautiful home of ours.

Kaminski goes far harder than he has any right to with it; peak “had to do it to ‘em” cinema

Even cooler is: Spielberg watched the godawful dreck, filtered out everything but the visuals, and concluded "this cinematographer is brilliant, I wanna work with him" I remember seeing this in a theater as a young critic and thinking "that's one of the best looking terrible movies I've ever seen"

Flávio Bolsonaro: "It is impossible to recognize the (Brazil) election results in the context of how these things happened. We are going to use our legal team, we are going to request the annulment of these elections."

Anybody else getting invasion of the body snatchers vibes from this never-ending parade of old masters saying "I'm lazy now, I don't feel like working that hard, where's the AI?"

Upside: Out of the 36 US cities with populations >500k, Dallas, Fort Worth, OKC, Fresno and Mesa are the only 4 cities with Republican mayors.

interestingly this interest in black voters doesn’t extend to the republican effort to deprive them of federal representation, nor do they seem interested in asking whether republican candidates are burdened by the fact that trump talks like a klansman

Seems like something that could happen here pretty easily

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
