Me and my Community Club crew got our hands dirty yesterday! Good to spend some time outdoors, and everyone worked really hard.

Down Syndrome Resource Foundation@dsrfcanada.bsky.social

Yesterday, DSRF's Community Club worked with @forourkidscanada.bsky.social Burnaby to remove invasive species from Beecher Creek. We learned about the harms that invasive species do to local ecosystems, and filled a huge bin with plants that don't belong in the area. A job well done! 🥬 🌿

Climate leadership isn’t what you say when you’re standing on a rooftop with musicians and activists. It’s what you do when the fossil fuel industry comes knocking. It’s whether you have the courage to say no to projects that threaten our collective future. 7/

I know that the experts urge us to communicate hope, but honestly I have zero hope that the world will cut emissions by 18% in 4 years.

I see we're having a debate about whether it's okay to go back to "X," the site owned by a trillionaire fascist who is currently bankrolling the GOP's midterm, throttled Ukraine's war effort, and still winkingly allows vast amounts of CSAM on his service Answer: No, what the fuck is wrong with you

My son was 1 when world leaders pledged to keep global warming below 1.5C in an attempt to avoid irreversible climate collapse. When he was 10 the planet spent a whole year above 1.5C. By the time he’s 14, 1.5C will likely be crossed forever. The greatest betrayal in the history of our species.

The government announcement says the average household will save $1,400 per year on heating by switching to a heat pump - exactly as I’ve been trying to explain to the Mission city council, which says it’s very concerned about affordability. Nevertheless…

Leah Stokes@leahstokes.bsky.social

Today, Canada announced $2 billion in heat pump rebates for everyday people. This is the kind of leadership we need from PM Carney! You love to see it!! www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

This is getting mixed reviews to say the least, but I thought it was really good. Interested in hearing what other climate folks think.

🔥If we use public dollars to electrify all these LNG exports, BC’s climate pollution will still increase by ~13 million tonnes. 🔥When the gas is finally burned overseas, add another ~130 million tonnes of climate pollution.

Glen Hoos reposted

Fun facts: 🔥Since 2007, BC’s climate pollution has decreased by 2.3 million tonnes. 🔥Approved LNG export projects will increase BC’s climate pollution by 21.2 million tonnes by 2035. 🔥This is ten times more pollution than we’ve managed to cut in nearly 20 years.

This graph should be front-page news. It shows an El Niño developing faster than the strongest previous events, with a forecast that climbs higher still. I’m worried. Why isn’t this getting more attention?

So basically, fossil fuel execs and AI execs are running the same playbook. “Yeah we’re probably gonna destroy humanity, but better us than our competitors.”

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

The people running these companies believe that climate change could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a fringe worry. Publicly, many executives soften their language to sound reasonable, but privately, the fear is real. No other industry poses this level of danger to civilization.

2°C by early winter?! It’s possible, depending on what seasonal model you use. The US CFS model forecast’s a monthly peak mean global surface temperature of +2.1°C (above pre-industrial) in February. If so, it would be the first time the Earth has breached the 2C “monthly”average… 1/

People don’t fake disability … they fake being well. They play through the pain. They say they’re “fine” when they’re suffering tremendously. They do this because our capitalist, ableist society demands it. Disabled people are discriminated against & told to “try harder” 🧵

I'd go farther. This report should be accompanied by a meeting -- call it a Summit -- of global leaders, led by a PM using his unprecedented global political capital to address the most pressing crisis ever, one that directly threatens Canadians. Instead, we're getting a sales conference.

This kind of report should be accompanied by a press conference—not with some low-level bureaucrat, but with the prime minister. Flanked by all of his ministers. In prime time, with technical briefings. This report says we're facing unimaginable disaster, yet we didn't even get a briefing.
