Just an old man trying to get by with art, language studies, manga and a burning hatred of conservatism.

"But people do stuff in hours with AI that used to take weeks! How can you say it doesn't increase productivity?!?" Answer: true productivity is about creating economic value, not simply getting tasks done quickly. AI is good at the latter but not the former (as I wrote for @hardresetmedia.com ).
New: Mayor Zohran Mamdani and a group of his friends have been secretly using the NYPD Police Academy’s gymnasium in Queens to play pickup basketball — scrambling some operations at the facility.

NEW: I spoke with current and former EA employees to understand how the latest layoff round played out and the realities of daily life at the U.S. publisher.
The short version? EA is controlled by an executive class that "cannot fail, only be failed." Workers, then, will always pay the price.
“I came to Cuba expecting to see suffering. What I did not anticipate was the near-total collapse of the state,” Robert F. Worth writes. He reports from the island on what daily life is like:
When public servants give evidence in a public hearing, about jobs that the public pays them to do, their answers should be direct, unambiguous, and detailed. That is the contract between the public and government. Any suggestion otherwise goes against that agreement.
Home Affairs is negotiating to share Australians’ data with Trump’s US government. Did they tell the US it can’t go to Palantir? Doesn't sound like it from this!
assuming the huge emotional and financial cost of a s 122 challenge results in the High Court striking down state and territory laws that legalise shackling for inconsistency with the Commonwealth law tabled by Senator Thorpe and supported by Labor that codifies a fundamental human right…
so then, after these laborious (sic) law making processes - politicians on 6-figure publicly funded salaries “debating” and enacting laws to authorise prison employees to directly harm women - someone finds the cash and political-legal will to bring a s 122 challenge in the High Court.
the unions could also join this campaign to stop prison guards from shackling women during childbirth. If prison guards wanted to refuse, they could make some noise. Same with strip searching. And solitary confinement of children.

I've met perhaps three people named Ebony and they've all been super pale white folks. Now... I've met a boy named Onyx and guess how pale he was too :)
With the help of Republican officials, ICE has quietly arrested hundreds of people in Florida per day. Watch the latest dispatch from journalist Amanda Moore (@noturtlesoup17.bsky.social) out of southwest Florida:
Today I learned the movie "Contact" had an ending that was cut because the producers thought "Nah, US audiences wouldnt get it, we can't be sure they know what the number Pi is"
I spoke to the mom of the 3-year-old soccer star who was left "thinking he did something wrong" after a league official called police "due to a disturbance between parents"
The youth sports league said they launched a review and reached out to the family
historically, this has been a profitable market segment but now it reeks of "please tell me what to do with my lower body and how to do it, live-in penis pastor"
So here you go ... Thank you again to my friends at both BioWare and EA. To even dream in your sandbox was a privilege.

It’s only just dawned on me, but Bioware’s impact on the culture I cover is so significant that I happened to post an advertisement for Knights of the Old Republic (2003) just hours before the studio closed.
I talked to Sakariye Abdi Mohamed, a Somali asylum seeker who was arrested at work, while he was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. I called him again once he was deported to Mogadishu. Here's what he had to say.
In August, the Trump administration flew 12 Somali immigrants to an ICE facility at Guantanamo Bay.
“Nobody tell us that we’re going to Guantanamo Bay,” Sakariye Abdi Mohamed told journalist Amanda Moore in a phone call from the detention facility. “Just like kidnapping.”
Asked if other organisations had anything to fearover speaking out, the premier said in August: “Where a contract has been cancelled, you know why it was cancelled”.
“I would be very worried if that was the message being sent [to other organisations]”.
it turns out Trump's entire life has been a nonstop cavalcade of sexual assaults and honestly, the fact that it hasnt presented the slightest impediment to any of his plans is the real ongoiong shock.
Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States.
"In total, more than 25 different women...have independently accused Donald Trump of rape, sexual assault, or other sexual misconduct."

Having a hard time processing the idea of a voter so engaged they even think to try to talk directly to their party's apparatus but end up going so far down the list of who to call about it they land on a legislator from the other party before someone finally picked up the phone.
A Republican voter from a district that does not even border ours called to complain that no R was running in his district.
Baffled, I informed him <boss> is D, and he told me "I know, but I figured you'd answer. none of the R's I called did, and neither will their local or state party office"
This is why I'm not actually on board with the whole Save Mass Effect thing.
I deeply love ME but saying "please Saudi backed EA, now that you've destroyed the studio that made these games, farm out the IP to some one else to limp on in some barely recognizable zombie version" ain't it.
Let it die
Does it need to be said that Mass Effect shouldn’t exist without the developers and team that was working on this game? Either they come back and make the game they were, or Mass Effect dies. kotaku.com/mass-effect-...
China’s first AI-generated theatrical feature has flopped, earning just $181,000 in its first weekend.
By contrast, the scrappy ‘Niu Lai’ turned its crude animation into a viral attraction, grossing nearly $10 million a couple of months ago.

the complaint here is also a complaint i've made in that a lot of movies are being shot to save money. It's too expensive to choreograph a fight that interacts with the scenery and make props and foley, oh lets just make it a wide open space

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.
It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.
