It's time for a proper announcement! I'm making a new London-based indie studio with some of my ex-Splash Damage colleagues. And we're already at work on our first game! You can follow us here:

Hello, Internet!

It literally can't be worse than the old launcher to be fair

"We vibe coded a new Epic Games Launcher" because "programming is hard", announce company we're somehow supposed to see as a serious Steam competitor https://bit.ly/4hMHbi5

Digital Eclipse's Making Of interactive documentary (similar to Atari 50) is on heavy discount right now. You get the original games across various platforms, the history, and a new version with commentary from JM.

Some of the earliest efforts at adapting cinematography and dramatic tension for computer games: Karateka, 1984 (Apple II)

if you are not thrilled about a hard problem being solved I think you're not doing mathematics, you're doing crosswords and you're bummed out someone spoiled the solution for you. use an abacus if you're afraid of computers, because this is a really silly position to take

The Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) statement on OpenAI’s October 6 release of mathematical documents just dropped! www.ahmath.org/statements

I understand the very human struggle, and computer engineers are at the centre of it, your entire skillset that you spent a lifetime cultivating is now something anyone can do, and it puts your self-worth in question. AI spoils the fun out of lots of things that used to be hard

Is the little shark missile animated? I'll have to install it myself to know, it's a really cool and weird 4X game btw!

A world where a twist ending is repurposed as a video title. where a thing's climax has been removed, leaving an advertisment for the gap where it used to be. such things are commonplace in. the twilight zone

I threw up in my mouth a little

A few days ago someone in a chat I’m in shared this screenshot and I genuinely, unironically dismissed it as a poorly made “modern AAA version of” meme because it didn’t even cross my mind this could be real

I've been porting this old flash game of mine from actionscript 3 to C++ (custom engine) and it runs at 5000+ fps at 30% gpu usage... I'll add gamepad support, achievements and a nice CRT filter or two and I'll put it on steam/itch for free, maybe port it to sega megadrive?

direct quote: "AI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one. It may not have been that "clearly" even just a year ago, but it's no longer in question today." 1/2

"There are other questions around AI (like what the economy of it will actually look like in the end), but "is it useful" is no longer one of those questions. Anybody who doubts that clearly hasn't actually used it." 2/2

always loved this artwork, in my mind the frame is part of a gate like the door in the background, great sense of scale, it makes me sad that videogames are just not this cool anymore. the game is Ishar, by Silmarils, legendary french developer

Pedro Soares@peachflavor3d.bsky.social

The artwork of Ishar: Legend of the Fortress by Mark Harrison used on the cover of the #MSDOS and #CommodoreAmiga releases in Europe and North America (Amiga version). Usual upscale/clean/retouch process applied.

Oh man, I loved this thing, I remember calculating the position of camera and objects on graph paper then trying to render

there's a parallel universe where Skate Jam, the sequel to Space Jam starring Tony Hawk existed and subsequently over there they never had 9/11, wars, covid. They cured cancer and climate change just got solved too

The reason Valve has defined AI code as separate from AI gen is that 100% of games released on Steam now contain AI code in them. 100% .. Through unity3d, UE or Godot or the steam SDK itself. Every artists must question how much of their tools rely on AI code underneath, and reconcile with it.

Yuri@yurisizov.bsky.social

Unreal quadrupling down on AI? Well, if you're considering Godot, keep in mind that the last version that was not made with AI contributions was 4.5. You can perhaps extend some courtesy to 4.6, but 4.7 openly includes AI-generated code and LLM-assisted changes. Do with this info what you will.

This is the key to understand, AI-assisted doesn't mean "vibe coding" or poorly written code. Vibe coding is literally prompting without even checking results. You're still responsible for the code you try to push into any repository, effort and programming knowledge is still required

Rémi Verschelde@akien.bsky.social

I see some concerns raised about Godot's policy on contributions using AI. TL;DR: Godot isn't vibe-coded. As a whole, the Godot foundation and maintainers are fairly critical of AI usage, and don't make nor accept vibe-coded contributions. Godot doesn't include AI features nor intends to add any.

I envy your surefootedness. I must admit I am unsure the genie goes back into the bottle and it's given me terrible anxiety. I think for art, for music, I agree there is no future for AI-gen there...none For coding, I am not so sure, the evidence is pointing to it being a permanent fixture.
