I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Eyeglasses, especially strong prescriptions. When I was a kid my dad had the "Coke bottle glasses". Heavy, thick. My eyesight is as bad as his was and my glasses are so light and thin

Speaking from my field, environmental law, we actually are making so much progress despite all the news: renewable energies are more affordable than ever before and the technology keeps improving We also DID manage to eliminate the +6, +5, +4 degrees scenarios in 20 years: we need to keep going !!

Wikipedia exists because a massive army of volunteers supported by a nonprofit organization have spent decades building and maintaining an unprecedented, mostly high quality repository of humanity’s general knowledge available free, instantly, to everyone.

since the year I was born (1975): rescues/no kill shelters, foster networks, spay/neuter programs, and a general shift in cultural attitudes about pet ownership have reduced the number of cats and dogs euthanized in shelters by 90% pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC...

In 1990, about 20 million animals a year were euthanized in kill shelters. Today, over half the shelters in the US are designated no-kill and less than 500,000 animals are euthanized.

Indoor smoking bans. Those of you on the younger side have no idea how pervasive it was to go out to a restaurant, a bar, even a flight and be bombarded with second hand smoke. It was awful. So glad it is gone.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Audio based entertainment. I grew up listening to tapes of The Green Hornet. For a long time there was almost nothing like that. And it was so difficult to take it anywhere. Now, Podcasts exist! There are hundreds of great programs. Also, audiobooks are way more accessible and plentiful.

I came across this creek while leaf peeping in New England. The afternoon light illuminated the maple tree from behind and created a refraction of crystal light that was beautiful to behold. Crystal Creek by Erin Hanson, 2018 Oil on canvas 40 x 26 in #autumn #leafpeeping #painting #art @bsky.art

Solar farms in the Gobi are cutting dust storms. A study of 17 farms found the panels slow surface winds by more than 9% and make soil up to 17% less erodible, reducing springtime dust by about 352,000 tonnes a month. RenewEconomy buff.ly/bambHT8 #ShareGoodNewsToo

As an example of how vital Internet Archive is, I spent several hours today using it to recreate the Yale Integrity Project on trans healthcare. The original url & contents were scrubbed & replaced with a page listing just a few of the original publications. www.transgendermap.com/issues/group...
FYI - I don't use these features but I know a lot of people do.
sorry for twitter link but this is where Celsys posted the news. Due to the PHP problems going on, some Clip Studio Paint online services such as cloud backup, the assets store and your material downloads history (anything not in the app itself) may be inaccessible for a while x.com/clipstudiopa...

Bioware made some of the most beloved stories and worlds in games and had such an impact on RPG that they essentially reshaped public perception of it and what it could be It also, not always successfully but always out of good intentions, was one of the biggest source of AAA queer stories in games

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...
Spoilers in here for the ending of the new Carrie series... I was already wary of it based on some of the criticisms I've seen, but seeing the changes made to the ending... Wow. I have liked Flanagan's previous shows but way to miss the fucking point of this fantastic, horrifying story.

A coworker told my friend about the Emma M Lion books. She read them all & told our gaming group. Now 4 of us are also reading the series. Word of Mouth works.
piggybacking off this: the most powerful sales technique in the world, for pretty much all of human history, has been word of mouth. If you like something someone made, TELL YOUR FRIENDS. Tell everyone. Leave reviews. Repost. Talk about it. Link to it and link to the artist. We depend on YOU.

I took a benadryl before my Covid shot on Friday and my arm was WAY less sore and I was much less tired than previous shots. Worth a try if the shot routinely kicks your ass.
This is the dose/timing for pre-vaccination: bsky.app/profile/raha... Fexofenadine is pharmacologically more complicated than cetirizine/loratidine and I can literally never remember the conversion factor and timing adjustments (and it's a PITA to look up).

When I was in high school, every classmate's mother had a horror story about an alley or a secret clinic somewhere, blood and terror and sometimes women dying in the effort to control their own futures. Abortion saves lives.
The reason abortion is popular right now is that roughly three generations of women have had access to it and we all know someone (possibly ourselves) whose life has been saved by it.

Not to sound like an old man yelling at clouds but the climate today of “if this makes me personally uncomfortable then it MUST be morally wrong somehow” when it comes to sex or kink or any sort of alternative lifestyle is so incredibly dangerous. You can just not like a thing and it’s fine.

Anyway it’s shit like this why you need to vocally support kinksters and pornographers even if you yourself don’t make or even like NSFW content. It’s why kicking Kink out of Pride is dangerous. They won’t stop at banning what you personally think is gross, they won’t stop until YOU’RE illegal.

Serious question: does this mean stuff like House of the Dragon and sexy historical fiction about UK’s royal family is illegal in the UK because of this dumbass law? Like are they gonna put Matt Smith in jail over this, or is it just for punishing disenfranchised rowdy upstarts into shutting up.
THE INDEPENDENT: From 6 November, UK law will ban porn depicting strangulation, incest and adults pretending to be under 16, following cross-party pressure over its impact on women and girls. - by Harry Taylor
