Generative AI is a cursed technology, making life worse, making us stupider and polluting the environment, all for very little practical upside.

Hardly surprising, I know engineers using AI to produce code in languages they don't even know and just using trial and error to "debug." Meanwhile organisations make AI adoption a key goal, so nobody wants to speak up against it.

Harvard just dropped a study AI productivity in software engineering and it found the average increase in productivity from using Claude code is.....zero and for exactly the reasons you'd think fion.ac/jellyfish.pdf

Once you understand reading and writing *are* thinking, using AI in this way is obviously an obscenity.

ai is driving people to suicide, but it also destroys the wages and working conditions of multiple industries without adding real value, so it's impossible to say if it's bad or not

Cory Doctorow is usually worth reading, but this one seems particularly insightful. He ponders how AI can seemingly be quite useful for an individual who needs to throw a software tool together, while being terrible for use by teams who are developing software they'll need to maintain.

I was trying to find out how to connect my smart trigger to my new camera, a Nikon Z6. Did a google search and forgot to turn off the AI results. So here is google AI confidently telling me to use the Z6's 10-pin accessory port. The Z6 does not have a 10-pin accessory port.

But LLMs deliver everything with absolute confidence and 10 or 20 percent of the time it's just complete nonsense. You have to check everything, so why bother with the LLM and the attendant cost in terms of water and power, and go to the source of the information you need?

That's an easily caught error, but it made me think about the nature of information. With a human source - a blog, a podcast, an actual conversation, you can apply some judgment. I know the strengths and weaknesses and biases of my friends and the websites I read.

I’ve officially resigned as Associate Editor for Frontiers in Systems Neuroscience. It used to be a reputable journal, but became a case study in how forced automation destroys academic integrity. 👇

Why, oh why, is the UK electricity price dependent upon the price of gas when we now have so many green energy sources?!! Change the "marginal" pricing system Labour, now! - and you will gain support from most households. Don't say it's complicated - fix it.

Uber’s COO has said that it’s getting “harder to justify” its AI costs because there was no way to show a link between AI spend and any meaningful increase in useful features. This is the first time I’ve seen a company say this directly. www.businessinsider.com/uber-coo-and...
