University of Nottingham, right now, is cutting 560 jobs. Do we need to rebrand universities as very large, very clean, land-based oil rigs to get government support?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

More detailed discussion of this will be coming, and the next phase of this project involves us speaking with history staff about their experiences of teaching, assessing, and supporting students in this AI-inflected environment. The student voice is essential, but so too is the staff experience.

Whether you want to share experiences from your department, discuss our preliminary findings, contribute evidence, explore opportunities for collaboration, or simply join the conversation, please get involved – we look forward to hearing from you! 👍

It explores how history students are using AI, what they think about it, and what they believe it means for their learning. Our data shows that students are already developing nuanced, sophisticated positions on AI – positions that deserve to help shape departmental and sector‑wide conversations.

The University of Exeter has confirmed that it won’t proceed with compulsory redundancies “at this time”. This means colleagues do not need to complete the pro forma, and there will be no selection process.

Struggling to work out why Jenrick would single out these three Commonwealth countries rather than, say, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, whose citizens have exactly the same rights. It’s a head-scratcher.

How do we enhance the engagement of history students in their degree programmes? A new article - 'Rethinking Engagement: Insights from UK History Departments' - bit.ly/4viEKru, by Sarah Jones and Simon Peplow offers discipline-specific proposals. Latest Open Access article in 'Transactions' 1/2

We argue that, though there is no single solution to the ‘wicked problem’ of student engagement, history departments can meaningfully support students by cultivating inclusive, responsive, and relational learning environments.

The sudden growth of the Green Party is an extraordinary, and still under analysed, development in British politics, with longer term origins than most people think. A while ago I wrote about the first Green Party elected to Parliament. No it wasn’t Caroline Lucas.
