As I said at an event at King's recently, it's a bit like having a personal trainer in the gym who keeps telling you how hot you are already, & offering to lift the next weight for you.

This book brings together cutting edge tech with the human stories that don't often make it into the AI-baron-led narrative. A great read. Also good to see that when she wants to get her shoes dirty, @sarahoconnorft.ft.com picks a pair of Blundstones - very on-trend! #AI #tech #GenAI #fashion #boots

Are you tired of the non-stop utopian/dystopian AI predictions from CEOs? Do you want to hear what's ACTUALLY happening, from the people it's actually happening TO? If so, I have good news: I felt the same, so I have worn out my shoe-leather & written this book! www.penguin.co.uk/books/462159...

If you look under the hood of some white-collar gig platforms, you can see how bad things are getting for workers as AI swallows demand. On Upwork, you have to pay to apply for jobs (and bid against other workers in an auction for the chance to be near the top of the pile which clients receive)

One thing about publishing a book is that you realise how many AI-assisted scams and grifts there are, sending fulsome praise for your book before trying to wheedle into some deal. Especially enjoyed this one, which seems to think I've written the (wonderful sounding) Horses and Ponies of Ireland!

Oh man, this might be my favourite review yet! If you, too, would like to stare at a wall after reading my book, you can buy it here :) www.penguin.co.uk/books/462159...

penguin.co.ukWe Are Not MachinesA tsunami of change, we are told, is sweeping the economy as robots and AI threaten to take over tasks done by humans. But while we worry that we’re robotizing our work, what if the real risk is that ...

Well I just finished this by @sarahoconnorft.ft.com & I didn't expect it to be quite so...stirring. My expectation was that it would be an enlightening read on a fairly dry topic & the reality was I closed it at the end, muttered "holy shit" and then stared at the wall for five solid minutes. 6/5

What a weird metaphor to choose. I'm no electrician but isn't a circuit breaker the thing that causes all the lights to go out?

Andy Burnham has promised to make his premiership a 'circuit-breaker for Britain' as he pledged to bring in a new economic and political model for the country. Follow the latest here: ft.trib.al/ObPUY1C

Listen to the pod, then buy the book - not only wise and humane but full of surprising details based on old-fashioned shoe-leather reporting

I had a lot of fun recording this podcast about my book We Are Not Machines with @timharford.ft.com live at the Bristol economics festival - watching Tim with an audience in the palm of his hand was truly watching a master at work. timharford.com/2026/07/caut...

1) Our BBC regional news is North West Tonight (led by the inimitable Gordon Burns when I was growing up.) 2) Anyone who has driven over the Cat and Fiddle road into Buxton over the moors knows it is ludicruous to call it the Midlands.
