This is how things should be. Build with the tech you want… to do these things, in these ways, for everybody. If your choice of tech finds this tough, that’s on you for choosing it. At the end of the day, it’s all HTML, CSS, and optional JS. All languages can do that, but they need to do it right.

Do UK government services really need frontend frameworks? 🤔 I built the same service using 8 different backends to find out. 8 backends. 1 GOV.UK Frontend. 0 frontend frameworks. Popularity ≠ suitability. nooshu.com/blog/2026/10...

I promise you that my daughter will either value the wooden fish on my bookcase because it was mine, or won't value it at all. Not because it's actually good. So, leave them to someone who values them because they were yours. If you don't have anyone like that then... that's the thing you wanna fix.

I wonder if has.bro will get registered

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

It’s a real shame that folk a decade ago weren’t warning developers against utterly insane things like CSS-in-J —  oh.

GitHub@github.com

GitHub.com has fully moved off CSS-in-JS to CSS Modules, resulting in 55% less server-side render time and 25% faster component init. https://github.blog/engineering/architecture-optimization/improving-site-performance-by-shipping-more-css/

blimey. I am now going to misstate my finances by £920.7 million. are you ready? I have £920.7 million.

Today it’s 50 years since I first presented Playschool wearing my blue beads and silver heart. I adore bringing joy into the lives of my Playschool Babies during the 12 years I was on the programme. ❤️

This artwork was created over the past year by a local Birmingham artist collective who wanted to bring unty from discord by repurposing the divisive Nationalist flags into a massive Brummie Reunion Jack. Suffice it to say, the inspiration for Goldship's magnificent work has not taken it well.

Jane@localnotail.bsky.social

Come on down to the Council House for International Day of Birmingham, see the Re-Union Jack ♥️ #OneBrum Goldship have repurposed dozens of dirty & torn polyester flags removed from Birmingham's lamp posts to create a huge Union Jack, adorned with the names of people who have called Birmingham home

"local-only, run in the browser, don’t track anything, aren’t full of AI features nobody asked for, and are designed to be as useful and as lovely as I could possibly make them." Certainly something I'd like to see more of. (Early release, so I suspect work is still to be done on keyboard nav etc)

since politics opinion-havers are talking about an early election again, i shall reiterate the same point: why would anyone do this ever

Stuart Langridge@sil.kryogenix.org

Stupid question: why would any politician listen to pundits about calling an early election? I really don’t see that the trade off is ever worth it. You definitely get a couple fewer years of governing, in return for which… not much. Three years later nobody says “oh they’ve got a mandate!”

I am very disappointed that this is not a thing. Not because of the subject matter, or the characters who I don't actually recognise, but... I would very much like to see a world where I can get egg and chips in pubs. Specifically my mum's egg and chips from the late 80s which we had every Monday

awh man, have you no humanity at all? now Apple will have to rename "Apple Intelligence" to "Siri Intelligence"!

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump tells the UN he is officially changing the name of Artificial Intelligence to "Super Intelligence" and says all US government documents will now be changed to refer to "SI"

Looking forward to seeing people here!

Looking for someone who can do 90’s point-and-click style pixel art for a commission. Short notice but it’d need to be done in the next two weeks. Lemme know if that’s you, and share your portfolio please!

That said, given some… discussion… today, I would also be curious about the prevalence of such Actual Players in Northern England and Scotland.

Nice campaign by the Norwegian Consumer Council about the declining lifespan of products. Enjoy!

We’ve got a couple of decent journalists here in the people’s republic of Brum, and I know of a couple in other cities, who are at Reach publications. I honestly don’t know whether I should be supporting their good work for these papers or sacking them off in favour of the Birmingham Dispatch et al

Josiah Mortimer@josiahmortimer.bsky.social

Kent Live and Aberdeen Live among Reach titles closing amid hundreds more job losses. It's never-ending with that company (where I worked for a while - I left before about four rounds of redundancies in one year) If you have an independent local outlet near you, now is a vital time to support it.

There is always supporting their private freelance work, but (and this is a problem with the Dispatch as well) I don’t really want to be further funding Substack who are (a) ok with the fash and (b) yet another big tech American firm who are good at marketing. But that’s not journos’ fault. Unsure.

open notepad type hi this is my website. type here is a link to elsewhere: <a href=“https://sil.kryogenix.org/“>me on Bluesky</a> There, you have a web page. You still need to publish it, but that’s no more difficult than signing up for (and ignoring crazy people on) Facebook, I promise.

Suw@suw.bsky.social

Fucking hell. Facebook is now limiting the number of links that a page or professional profile can include in a post to TWO PER MONTH, unless you pay them $7.99 a month. Fucking assholes.

(a) if I want to buy “ugly thick 1980s NHS glasses” then Poundland sell a bunch already (b) it is so good that “pervert glasses” has caught on as a phrase just like “glasshole” did and for the same reason. I wonder if anybody who makes them will recognise this? Doubt it.

In web development teams across the land, someone wrote up a task which said “you know Reader Mode? that browsers do to make a clean easy way to read pages? Make sure that’s broken on our website so it doesn’t work.” And then a developer implemented it. I wonder if a little bit of their souls died.

I don’t normally do this: If you’re an archivist or metadata sicko who is doing working to preserve/collect/organize TTRPG materials and/or Actual Play & you’ll be at PAXU, let me know. If there’s already something brewing I don’t need to be involved unless it’s useful. But it needs to be there.

OK, what’s next in Project All Public Conversations Must Be About AI All The Time? Well, “we’ve achieved AGI” only lasted a few days but “AI will kill us all” has legs. And “AI will take your job” is still strong. Goooood. What’s next? We have “AI girlfriends” and “AI food” cued up for November

oh look, looking at my inbox I have also achieved enough fame to get oppressive "helpfulness" by some bot from ilands. Can someone explain why a company like this gets given a huge pile of money that they can set fire to like this?

Mike Masnick@masnick.com

Read this yesterday and was almost a little disappointed I hadn't been hit up by an iLands bot. Guess what I got today?

What’s your origin story? I was born [predictive text] I was born in the same time as you and I was born in the wrong time and I was a little bit older than you but I was born in the right time and I am now a little older than you and I am a little older than your age

this is really terrible. Imagine if almost every British newspaper journalist were to point this out on Bluesky but basically none of them were to point it out in the paper or call out the Telegraph and other papers like it. Is this omerta? Journalist solidarity? When does that end? Maybe never?

Alex Andreou@sturdyalex.bsky.social

I wonder if there is a single person still at the Telegraph who feels even a smidgeon of shame, that in just over a decade it has gone from newspaper-of-record to fluffers-for-rent. It is revolting. Farage, apparently, "lands" a record crypto bung.

We know tech companies collect data on everything we do but now that data is being combined with AI to make algorithms which predict our behaviour. Today I presented a bill to stop 'digital twinning' without express consent. There is only one you. Lets keep it that way!
