I’m now also: - Liles Prof of English - 26-27 @folger.edu Public Humanities Fellow - under contract with @mitpress.bsky.social for my next book on the history & making of Actual Play (performance of TTRPGs) - work ahead on why/how we play, tied to ideas about community, story, fame, & friendship

Dr. Emily Friedman@ecfriedman.com

Howdy, y’all. I’m a tenured prof who studies storytelling outside the rules of mass media. This has included never-published manuscripts from during the age of print (1750-1900) & of late has made me a leader in the study of #TTRPG Actual Play. I’ve learned a lot about friendship along the way.

TIL that Del Close is a bit player in The Blob (1988) Which is apparently what you do after working with The Committee and coining The Harold and kicking a heroin addiction.

Sunday was Lantern Night at my alma mater, which I still keep with me (I remain my class’s Songsmistress, a title I am all the more grateful for because, like many good things in my life, it came because I was a total dork with no chill)

Tonight is Lantern Night at my alma mater. Now more than ever, I am grateful for how Bryn Mawr shaped me. No place is perfect, nostalgia is a trap, but I am thankful for that space to be myself. O, friends of wisdom, Let us gather… catapultingintoclassical.wordpress.com/2017/11/08/h...

My main takeaway from this trip is simple: keep at it. There is a real hunger out there for interactive designs with strong emergent narratives. Folks want games that are worth their time.

Rockstar devs in the UK are set for a very strange November. Check this timeline: 12th Nov: The ballot opens for employees to vote on union recognition. 17th/18th Nov: The final two days of an employment tribunal over union busting. 19th Nov: GTA VI releases! 26th Nov: Union recognition results.

If you follow me & aren’t a roleplaying nerd (or want to introduce folks) I recommend @bullypulpithq.bsky.social highly. Ghost Court is a great warmup, Desperation can be funnier & more gripping than you’d think, & I’ve come to agree with @oneshotrpg.bsky.social Star Crossed is a great ice breaker.

Relatedly: I’m REALLY BAD at asking people for anything because I am keenly aware of how little cash I have to access most of the time & *underestimate* other kinds of value that I & the institutions I work with bring. And it’s VERY hard to know who values what.

Ooooh boy.

Elizabeth Holmes is not the face of motherhood for incarcerated women. Jazmin Valentine wailed in agony for 6 hours in labor while staff and nurses LAUGHED at her. She had to resort to sliding her amniotic sac under her cell door to prove she was in labor.

Another interview for the Mousetrap design series: this one is with @kiennas.bsky.social. We discuss magic circles through their experimental game, "Your Magic Circle," down to emotional bleed as a form of "crossing" the magic circle. I hope you find it as insightful as I did!

As someone who was in the audience for this particular flight, it was an amazingly curated experience that delighted and educated and entertained simultaneously. Just wonderful and I felt like I should have been paying extra for an excursion on a TTRPG adventure cruise or something!

I also love (judging from @gshowitt.bsky.social latest newsletter) that Grant & I are parallel-developing workshops that try to get folks freed from the D&Dragon in their minds (Grant to make more weird game designers, & me to make more folks who want to play stuff by weird game designers)

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

This is such a fantastic photo: "The Witches' Tea Party" but I want to use it to explain the origin of the tall, pointy witches hat. The real story of this photo: These are residents at the Hospital of the Holy & Undivided Trinity: an almshouse in Castle Rising, Norfolk, England established 1610.

There is something demoralizing in listening to a fan podcast that misses the point entirely. There’s something a little reassuring when you realize only a few dozen people have probably heard it. There’s something re-demoralizing when you consider that’s still several classrooms’ worth of people.

My friend Joe Chevalier (owner of Yellow Dog) put Melissa Albert’s THE CHILDREN into my hands & said it would be of interest. He was right, & I may never forgive him. WHEW.

Dr. Emily Friedman@ecfriedman.com

I didn’t just take random photos of things moots didn’t recall saying — I bought a bunch of my classmates’ books (the ones I didn’t already own), even more books, and of course the latest in Yellow Dog swag (now my noggin SHALL NOT FREEZE)

That’s fortune-cookie level vagueness. You think that applies to your kid specifically if you’re a mark being cold-read by a drive-thru psychic.

She is empathetic, and creative, & loves animals — But the key is that I can point to specific ways she shows her empathy, the way her creativity is very haptic, & that her current favorite animals include a sloth she’s slinging around her body as part of her Halloween costume (zoo keeper)

My niece is 8. She loves sushi & anything crafty but is “over fairies.” Apparently Shakespeare freaks her out. The last 2 birthdays she’s co-designed games with her dad that are both lovingly generous to her guests & totally bonkers. She’s on student council & gets commended for helping others.

Let’s be so clear: this is the work that gets us a little further down the road towards preservation. Combined with Anne’s savvy with metadata, it promises to make a MEANINGFUL database for Actual Play.

We resent universities as proof that a touch‘o’socialism is good actually so we blame them for all of capitalism’s externalities.

Brendan Cantwell@cantb.bsky.social

I am consistently vexed by the fact that elite consensus is more interested in holding US colleges and universities accountable for things that they have a little control over - white color wages, rent in Santa Barbara - than things they can influence - campus safety, instructional approach.

little bit of a tangent: i once had a department chair who physically threatened me because the graduate student he was having an affair with was struggling in my class. i ended up resigning a few months later. so dating a student can have far-reaching consequences beyond the abuse of the student.
