Thirty years ago, intersex advocates refused to stay silent. October 26th marks #IntersexAwarenessDay and their fight for bodily autonomy. Nearly 2% of people are born with bodies that don't fit stereotypes of male or female bodies. We aren't disordered—and we deserve control over our bodies.

Earlier this year, SIECUS joined a coalition challenging the Trump-Vance admin’s attempt to gut proven sex ed programs and replace them with an ideological “body literacy” program that promotes abstinence-only rhetoric, spreads misinformation about contraception, and erases LGBTQIA+ young people.

Comprehensive tools that address the full picture of sex and relationships—consent, dating norms, gender stereotypes, and more—in students' real-world context have potential to both shift culture and reduce perpetration. That work has to start early, but abstinence-only programs skip all of it.

Consent isn’t complicated. If they don’t say yes, don’t. If they can’t say yes, don’t. And if you see someone being harmed, don’t just watch. Step in or get help. Here’s how to start teaching this to your kids now, so they carry it to college.

What did sex ed never teach you? We’re answering it with our new series, This Week in Sex, coming later this month.

Your body belongs to you. A small, well-funded minority is replacing real sex ed with shame-based, medically inaccurate information that serves their backwards agenda – not families, not young people, and not the truth.

I was raped at a frat party. It’s a shockingly common experience and preventative interventions in college are way too late.

Our new report on sex ed curriculum examined 50 school districts across New York State. We gave each district an A-F grade - and nearly half of the school districts received an F, based on their coverage of essential topics, the accuracy of the info taught to students, and how biased it was.
