Today we're proud to launch the Big Lead Table, in collaboration with the city of Syracuse, a year's long effort by the NYCLU to eliminate lead hazards in every neighborhood — so every child, regardless of race, income or zip code, can thrive with safe homes, clean water, and healthy schools.

The city of Syracuse has known about its lead water crisis since at least the summer of 2024, when extraordinarily high levels of lead were found in drinking water. Yet city, state, and federal agencies have continually failed to take action to address it. Learn more this #NLPPW:

It's National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. New York State has a long history of lead usage, primarily in paint and water service lines. Exposure to lead can have severe and permanent health impacts - especially for children. In fact, lead is a potent neurotoxin with no safe level of exposure. 🧵

In Syracuse, over 25% of households have extremely high levels of lead in their water. In Onondaga County, Black children are almost six times more likely than white children to be exposed to lead poisoning. The quality of the water we drink should not depend on our skin color, zip code, or wealth.

Happy Intersex Awareness Day! Today marks 30 years since intersex people began demonstrating for human rights, bodily autonomy, and freedom from discrimination. Nearly 2% of all people are intersex. But intersex people are still fighting for recognition, respect, and protection under the law.

NYC is the only city in the U.S. with a ban on nonconsensual intersex surgeries across its entire public hospital system. NYC could make history again by becoming the first city in the country to explicitly protect intersex people from discrimination under its Human Rights Law. Take action 👇

The database includes thousands of entries produced by the SCPD summarizing internal police misconduct investigations and dispositions. It also includes the relevant officer name, their title, the type of misconduct alleged, and the penalties recommended or imposed, where that data exists.

Good. The attempted denial of medically necessary health care, including gender-affirming health care, to people in prison is a violation of their fundamental constitutional rights. Federal prison officials cannot deny transgender people essential health care.
