1963 saw the first Clean Air Act and 1970 the most significant Clean Air Act. Supporters of all these laws cited Donora as evidence of the need for air pollution legislation.

The Donora Fog helped lead to laws cleaning up the air. The first meaningful air pollution legislation in the nation’s history passed Congress and was signed by President Eisenhower in 1955.

The people in power would be just fine returning to the conditions that made this disaster happen. In fact, they are busily removing the regulations that protect us. Let's start throwing them out by voting for our lives this week. Vote however you can and however feels secure where you are. Vote.

Erik Loomis@erikloomis.bsky.social

This Day in Labor History: October 27, 1948. An air inversion trapped the pollution spewed out by U.S. Steel-owned factories in Donora, Pennsylvania. The Donora Fog killed 20 people and sickened 6000 others. Let's talk about this deadly legacy of industrial pollution. That photo was taken at noon!

In other news, i walked 10 miles yesterday from my home in Brooklyn to Jackson Heights to have Nepali food and I saw so many beautiful things and people along the way. I love New York.

Am currently fully invested in just doing human stuff like walking and looking at things and people. Thank you to NYC for being the perfect place to do that.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

Hungary's recent election was less free and more unfair than the upcoming US midterms, and pro-democracy forces still won. Similar point about Serbia's election this weekend. In normal democracy terms, America is in bad shape. But in consolidated authoritarianism terms, we're looking pretty good.

Have you voted yet? I voted early yesterday in downtown Brooklyn and there was a line because there were so many people there, not the usual scene. Also, they had run out of stickers and this made me glad/sad. Get out there and vote, people. It's what we can do in the next 8 days.

big sigh of relief

Lula has been reelected president, Brazilian media has now called. An extraordinary comeback for the left-wing politician who trailed by 2 points in round 1 but managed to hold off Flávio Bolsonaro, the former president's son.

The Justice Department's last-second letters about noncitizen voting contain people with no history of voting whatsoever, and they're moving so fast they sloppily sent one county the wrong list of names.

Keep pushing. Do not stop. This is the job. It's so good to see someone doing the work.

Being "not-white" even a little bit in a predominantly white rural area, as long as it's enough for white people to notice, also teaches you that no mater what, no matter how "nice" you are, no matter how much you strive to be "one of the good ones," you'll never truly be one of them. Not ever.

IMO the quintessential tension between riders and many motorists is this tug of war over one group's personal safety versus the other group's convenience. Then you see the pattern—that as a default, many people advocate for their own benefit or preferences at the expense of a larger public good.
